Subject : Build A bear - rip off or worth the money?

What do you think ladies? It's step daughter to be's 7th birthday in a couple of weeks and I suggested this to H2B. He thinks it's an overpriced, American import and a load of rubbish. I think that although it's expensive, it's worth it - my 3 nieces have all been, absolutely loved it and treasure their bears.

I think my brother has scared H2B with tales of how long you have to queue!

My kids adore their build a bear (bear factory) bears and I think they are worth it as they are only expensive the first time, then you can buy the outfits for cheap birthday pressies.
Don't buy it for her though take her there, they make it for her and give it a heart which you wish on and print a birth certificate for her too, they then put in it a little home box too.
I have never had a big queue in there though.
The bears start from £8 and the outfits are about £10.

H2B keeps banging on about how we didn't have those type of american things when we were kids, what is wrong with just buying her a teddy bear (ready made as it were lol) and that it's a complete take on. I think that she would love it and she's only 7, aren't most things for 7 year olds a bit of a rip off to some extent anyway? I'll mention it again but if he says no then he can pick her pressie himself - and I can watch him panic the day before her birthday!

I know. My youngest niece just turned 4 and I took her to Toyrs R US for her pressie. She wanted a Sylvanian Families house. It was £50 and there wasn't even any furniture in it. It would have cost double that to deck it out.

My sister works for Build A Bear in Maidstone, Kent. She loves working there and says that the happiness on the kids faces is fantastic and there for priceless.

It is one of the better American things that we have over here.

So i'd definately say take her along and get her one done, just think of it as she'll be asking for more expensive things when she gets older.

I think between £10 and £20 for a build a bear is reasonable if you take her there yourself, she will have all the fun too.

Wait until she is older and wanting GHD hair straighteners/mobile phone/wii/ipod/laptop. He'll be wishing she'd settle for a teddy bear then.

Personally i don't think you just pay for the bear but the whole experience. It is lovely to really personalise your bear.

I love build a bear i think its wonderful - but as a one off treat! I have one (yep - its mine lol) that i got in america when i was 20. I cant wait to take my daughter, shes only 2 at the mo so wont appreciate it yet. Ill take her when shes older! its a lovely experience which you will love! I agree it does get a bit pricey especially as they make the most of all the latest stuff eg. theres prob loads of High school musical stuff.. plus you can buy the bears shoes and glasses and bags .... it all adds up!! My friends bear (that i got her for her 21st lol) has its own passport lol! They have a website - might be wotrh a look before you take her!

Have a fab time! xxxx

I'm taking my 3 flowergirls here the day before my wedding to build their own to carry down the aisle. mainly to help them bond and get to know each other. I also thought it would be better than flowers which they will prolly bash around (they're all 3)

Expensive, but worth it I think and the bear will be their gift.

Looking forward to cowboys and firemen being carried down the aisle tho lol

i think that build a bear is a very good idea (more for children though!!!) me and h2b made each other one in new york and it ended up costing about £30!!! and now they are just put away in cupboard...but for a little one i think they are well worth the money...and the enjoyment chidlren get out of making the bears...they will love it!

I think they're great, its great fun watching them being put together and checking if they're cuddly enough. Hubby got me one in hamleys on our first trip to london together (bribery for taking me to football the day before and to apologise for me ending up with concussion), we enjoyed picking out the bear together and taking it round the different stations (check they've stuffed the feet properly they hadn't with mine so I made them do it again, but then it was hamleys on a saturday in the school holidays, rammed). Mines called little Duncs (after hubby) and he left in charge of cuddling me when hubby goes away with work. I've come home before now to find hubby sitting watching tv with him on his lap, waiting for me.

They are lovely bears but I think the process is a bit short and they are expensive if you want anything more than the basic bear. My friends and I bought one for someone's christening and we were all disturbed about where the tube goes to fill them with fluff! maybe we're we're just sick tho!
