Subject : It hurts a lot!

I had my tonsils out on tuesday and oh my god its painful!! Im crap with pain so am probably overeacting but my throat is in so much agony. I cant swallow properly therefore am starving as cant eat, I cant sleep properly as my throat is so swollen I keep choking on the long dangly bit at the back of the throat which has tripled in size! ( dont know its proper name!!) If I do sleep I wake myself up with the amount of drool coming out of my mouth ( sorry tmi) My body is pumped full of medication so Im so drowsy and weak but they dont even work in terms of pain relief! I know this is all normal and was to be expected but im feeling very sorry for myself as H2B has gone back to work today so had no one to look after me!
On the bright side I am now off work for 2-3weeks so can keep myself busy with YAYW and become even more addicted!
xx

The surgeon said I have to try and avoid ice cream etc as by eating hard foods like toast it helps to heal the throat quicker which is easier said than done! It takes me so long to eat my food is cold before im even half way through! Ice cream is my vice at the moment though!
Mrs Cshaw2b sorry if I put you off I suppose its better in the long run as so glad I will not get tonsillitus anymore. The pain wont last forever (touch wood)! Its still worth going to see the consultant and ignore drama queen me!! Just think at least you will get cards and presents and you can get your H2B to run around after you for 2 weeks!

I've had this done too. Within a couple more days (which I know right now seems a long time) you should be starting to feel a little better and things will calm down a bit (like swollen dangly bits!). Then, yay, time off work to relax. It might seem like a 'little' operation but it feels pretty major.

I knew you were going to mention toast - I remember it well. Anything scratchy does the trick! It's alright for the doctor to say you should eat it - easier said than done!

Feel better soon...

I stayed in for one night. They tend to send people home the same day but because my op was late afternoon I had to be monitored overnight. To be honest I was so weak and drugged up I dont see how they can send anyone home the same day so I would def ask to stay overnight. I had 3 lots of morphine which helped alot and wouldn't have got that if I was sent home. If I had my way I would have liked to stay for 2 nights but they threw me out! Try and ask lots of questions about the aftercare as they didnt tell me much and just gave me a pack of pills and discharged me! Subsequently I have now scared myself from reading horror stories about botched ops and poor aftercare from researching aftercare myself on the internet!

Like some of the other girls have said, Ice Cream or Ice Lollies are also supposed to be good. You'll get through it soon enough hun :)

When my h2b had his wisdom teeth taken out, he couldnt eat either, too painful to move his jaw. Maybe drink soup through a straw? I don't know if that will help.

Chin up chk

I had this just over a year ago - I kept waking up in the night with pain until I could take more painkillers. I actually had to go back to the doctor for more painkillers. Stuff like toast definitely helps. It was horrible for about 10 days, and took about 3 weeks to heal properly, but it's definitely better now not to have tonsillitis all the time!

I had my wisdom teeth out the year before - soft things are fine for that (I ate weetabix for 4 days) - but that heals more quickly. You do need to eat toast for tonsillitis to help clear your throat.

I had mine out on my 4th B'day and still remember the experience. I ate a lot of crisps and gargled with salt water to aid healing. I thought ice cream would be good to reduce swelling.

Hang in there, hope you feel better soon x

Morphine? blimey! they dont usually give that after tonsils do they?
Defintely gargle salt water as Celtic Dreams says , will keep it clean and help it heal. I was told after my son has his out that the reason they tell you to eat scrathy food rather than soft stuff like icecream now is that they don't leave it to clot anymore but cauterise the wound . They told me ..and him that if he didn't eat the hard stuff it ewouldn't heal an d could get infected.
What painkillers are you on? They had me give Josh a paracetamol based one and an ibupofen one at the same time, one for pain one more to reduce the swelling x

ready salted crisps was the thing i ate when i had my tonsils out ( the salt cleaned it all out and the roughness of the crisps helped) it still hurt though but did seem to heal a bit quicker.

gawd I had mine done at 22 and it was painful - I was very annoyed about the toast thing as all my friends that had it done as children had ice cream!!

DON'T eat tomatoes as that was the worst pain

Buy some chloraseptic from the chemists as that is good for numbing the throat and then take care o yourself. My brother thought it would be funny to jump out and say boo to me and I screamed so loudly I burst my stitche and ended up back in hospital!

I was suprised with morphine too but im not complaining it was a godsend!! Im on anti-inflammatory antibiotic and paracetamol both are rubbish so think Im going to go to doctors on mon and see if they can prescribe me anything else. Mosschops the thought of eating ready salted crisps is terifying! I have been up all night after getting a cough now and its so sore this morning it stings if I try and drink anything. | have noticed some blood when I spit which is not good but im not sure how much you need to be bleeding before you have to go back up to the hospital! Im gonna see how it goes today and if it gets worse head back up there.

Oh my god I would rather go through child birth than have that op again! I was 37 when I got mine out and was soo painful! They say the older you are the worse it is. On the bright side never had a sore throat since. They kept me in for nearly 2 days made me eat weetabix with hardly any milk yuck. Then I lied and said I had eaten my dinner which I made my friend stuff down her mouth so I could get home LOL. I only got 1 week off work. Young 17yr old got hers done before me and she was great afterwards and was told it was because she was 20yrs younger than me. Bloody cheek LOL anyway I hope you get better real soon and eat as much rough texture food you can as this helps scrapes the throat. Ouch I know x x

I know it's really hard, but you must try to eat something solid - I avoided solids and ended up with a terrible infection and it just dragged the pain on and on. Keep your chin up - it will be worth it. It was the best thing I've ever done xxx
