Hi!

I can't decide whether or not to have our wedding on the 28th of May next year, which is s a Bank Holiday weekend? My parents think this is a bad idea and that it will make things more chaotic or expensive. Anyone on this forum had a Bank Holiday wedding? Good idea or bad idea? All opinions/advice welcome!

I am having my wedidng on Bank Holiday Sunday, 2 May this year. We chose the venue first, then decided on the date, and it hasn't made anything anymore expensive.

We did it because the venue had set minimum numbers on a Saturday of 120, which we didn't want to cater for, we only wanted 80, and on any other day there is no minimum.

We decided tghat we didn't want a Friday, as we didn't want to expect people to take a day off work to come to the wedding, but we wanted the bank Holiday Sunday, so most would still have the Monday off work.

We did give people plenty of notice (18 months), as people do make plans for bank Holidays, and we were also careful not to expect anyone to do anything else over other Bank Holidays (i.e. make sure you hen do isn't over Easter) , as you can't expect anyone to sacrifce all their bank holidays for you!

No-one hads moaned (well, not to me anyway!) so I think it is a good idea.

We're having ours on the August bank holiday this year. We have a lot of people travelling up north for it from down south and thought it would be fairer on them to have an extra day to travel back, or make a long weekend of it. My H2B was initially sceptical of having it on a bank holiday, so we asked our friends what they would prefer and they all agreed a bank holiday was better for them.

We've not encountered any higher costs because of this either, or struggled to find suppliers. We've just had to give people plenty of notice to book accommodation as they're popular weekends for hotels etc.

Im getting married on 5th May 2012 which is a bank holiday weekend. The venue charge the same all year round, so that wasn't any different.
I think you'd be fine.

hi, im getting married 29th may this year! it hasnt effected the price or made anything more difficult in anyway! its made it better really as we have some family coming down for wedding and we arnt going on hm till tue so we get to spend sunday with them and they can go back on the monday! much better!x

We're getting married on the August bank holiday too, and also have a lot of people travelling up north from down south and much further afield. I haven't noticed any increased costs but we're making sure our guests have had information on accommodation in advance so they can ensure they book it quickly. We wanted the Sunday to host a smaller party and also to give people more opportunity to travel back.

We were married on August 29th this year, which was a bank holiday weekend...
There was no excess stress, and it was no more expensive, and was lovely to have that extra day to see people, and they could recover from the wwedding antics...x

hi, we are the same as angeljem, we are getting married sunday 2nd may this year. we choose it because most people will have the monday off work, kids off school and the roads shouldnt be too bad being the first may bank holiday.

We are getting married on 30th April which is the the Friday of the first May bank holiday weekend, we have experienced aboslutely no problems or price hikes doing this xx

I've been to 2 bank holiday weddings in the past 2 years and both worked out much more expensive for the guests.
Small hotels & B&B's will insist on a minimum 2 night booking
Both couples also decided that they would have a 2 day wedding instead, there was no obligation to attend both days, howvever you still feel obliged to attend it all and end up spending twice as much.

We are getting married on the Saturday of august bank holiday this year and everyone thinks its great as they are getting to make a weekend of it as we have alot of guests travelling for the wedding,

I haven't found anything more expensive or difficult to book with it being bank holiday.

I'e also been to weddings on bank holiday weekends and its been great to have an extra day off.

Bear in mind that it will be almost impossible for your guests to book accommodation for just one night -it's either the whole weekend or nothing. We went to a friend's B/H wedding last year and ended up making a very long round trip as it was just too expensive to book a weekend'd accommodation, put the dogs in kennels for the weekend etc. Having said that, we're getting married in Cornwall on Easter Saturday this year, and most of our friends are only too happy to spend the weekend down there, some are staying a full week and having a holiday too!!

we're getting married on 29th May this year and are having people coming over from Denmark so they've had to book hotel rooms for their stay and there have been no difference in the prices neither for any of the wedding stuff nor for the hotels.

We will get married on the 30th May this year, which is the Sunday of the Bank Holiday.. I chose it as we are getting married away from home... and it gives our guests less of a rush in getting down and back.. without having to take additional time off work. I figured that seeing as my sister and his brother can ask us to go abroad.. we could do this.. and well our wedding, whilst we are having 70 guests, is all close family and friends.. so they dont really see our wedding as a chore.

Yes there are places that require 2 day bookings for guests, but many do not.. and we made sure we approached a hotel and sort of negotiated a deal.

As a guest, I think I'd like a bank holiday wedding, as I like to relax at the weekend, and sometimes if you have a wedding on a weekend, u finish work friday, stress getting ready saturday, go to the wedding, wake up in a hotel the next day with a hangover and its then straight back to work.

Our wedding was no more expensive, in fact in some areas.. we were able to negotiate discounts, as if you go for the Sunday they can still do the Saturday wedding the day before.

If your venue is a public place, bear in mind there may be more public visitors... but as for chaotic otherwise, I think its the opposite... I'll have my whole family off work the day before the wedding which wouldnt be the case if it was a Saturday... I think its more relaxed.

Really... if people are the type that are gonna moan at your wedding, they will find something to moan about no matter what you do... so I'd say go with what you want! x Your never going to please everyone, so may as well please yourself. x

I am getting married on the 1st May which is also a BH wkd. I thnk it doesnt affect the cost if you want to do it on Sat however some venues will charge you the Sat price if you do it on a Sunday when Monday is a BH. I guess it depends if you are having people travelling to your wedding or not. I am having friends and family coming from all over the place and the extra day off allows them more time to get home and back to work without having to take a day off work.

Hi I'm getting married on the Friday 27th August which is a bank holiday weekend, no extra costs have been incurred from this and no need to book 2 nights etc for guests as there is a wedding on the saturday all ready.

I have guests travelling from all over and they have actually booked nights in another hotel to make a 'family weekend' out of it and are glad it doesnt mean they have to rush back home the next day

Another bride getting married on 27th here. We decided to go for the Friday as then people can have a long weekend and as some will probably be travelling by train they won't have to do the journey home on a Sunday or a Bank Holiday Monday.

We haven't had any problems with price increases but did make sure that we got our save the dates out before Christmas. If it had been any other time of the year we probably wouldn't have bothered with them but thought it was probably a good idea to get them out nice and early.

We're getting married on 29th August Bank Holiday Sunday and actually got 10% discount from the venue as it was on a Sunday. They wrote in to their promotion that any weddings on a Friday or Sunday were discounted (due to most being on Saturdays) and they don't care that it's a bank holiday!!! BARGAIN!!!!

None of our guests have come up with any problems and the hotel rooms are no more expensive and there are no minimum nights at ours. I think it is purely down to where you are etc.

I get married 29/08/10 the sunday of the August bank holiday. It made the cost of the venue & catering cheaper as its a Sunday, however the registrar fees are slightly more expensive & one florist I phoned said she couldn't provide anything for a Sunday wedding as she didn't open. I think it's quite nice to get married on a bank hol weekend though as it's a more relaxed celebration which can continue all weekend.

We are getting married on May 28th next year and there are loads of other girls too. If you look on my other topics I started a post for 28th May 2011 brides.

As far as I know none of us have had problems arise because of it being a bank holiday. A few ladies have just sent out their STD's and I am going to be sending mine in the next few weeks to give everyone plenty of notice.

Nothing that we have booked has been any more expensive due to the bank holiday. I think maybe if it was the bank holiday sunday/monday they could of been but the Saturday is just a normal day according to the calender.
