Subject: Negotiating an upgrade?
Just wondering whether anybody has ever successfully negotiated an upgrade on their flights for their honeymoon. We couldn't justify the extra £500 each when booking ours but our honeymoon might be the only excuse we ever have

No You might have more luck at the gate / check in desk though. We're hoping to get one using our air miles, but that doesn't really count. Def worth asking though! Because we booked our flights through Virgin Holidays not direct with Virgin Atlantic, they said they couldn't guarantee anything.

I think it depends on where you're going and when! If you're going to a honeymoon destination at peak time then realistically the chances of you getting an upgrade are pretty slim seeing as everyone will be there for the same reason! My sister and hubbie got upgraded on their flights on their honeymoon by showing their marriage certificate but it depends on who you're flying with - do your research into the airline to find out if they regularly offer upgrades, and if so, how to get one (there's loads of info on the web about this!) I've been upgraded in hotels twice - once because the hotel was quiet - I didn't ask, they just did it! The second time was a Hilton in London and I was there with my Mum for her birthday weekend. I got in touch with the hotel first and told them it was her birthday and said 'Anything you can do to make the weekend extra special would be really appreciated' (I didn't outright ask for an upgrade!) When we arrived we'd been upgraded to a deluxe room, and there was chocolate cake and balloons in the room!! Good luck!

You're more likely to be able to secure a hotel upgrade than a flight upgrade; just email the hotel as the above poster did and mention it's your honeymoon, and then as the above poster said, say something about how if they could make it even more special it would be really appreciated. If you're going at peak time they may not be able to, as it will depend on capacity; but they may give you a free bottle of wine, or something similar.
Re flights: it depends on the airline. If it's a package tour operator, upgraded seats tend to be limited, and at peak season are often fully booked. If you do try to blag one, I'd maybe just be talking about the wedding/looking at wedding photos in the queue, and see if they say anything. If they don't, you could ask if there are any upgraded seats available as it's your honeymoon, and again see what they say; worth a shot.

Your best bet is to ask at check in. And make sure you are dressed smart - if you are wearing trainers etc they won't even consider.
I have only been upgraded to 1st class once and that was when I was 8!!!! and more was down to my parents knowing the person working on the check-in desk!! Also, we checked in quite late (my dad had taken the wrong passport so had to rush home and back before check in closed) so they knew the spaces in 1st class wouldn't be taken

Hi
We recently went to the Maldives with Emirates for our honeymoon. When checking in I just asked outright. I said we were on our honeymoon and what are the chances for an upgrade. Don't be rude just be nice about it. She explained she would put us forward but generally they only upgrade when economy is full (which it was) and there are spaces in 1st class. Unfortunately first class was full as well. Doh!
Good luck! xxx
