Subject: Budget for favours
We are having a wedding abroad and so will only be having around 35 guests. I was discussing favours with H2B and he wants to get our favours engraved ( we are looking at bottle openers in the shape of a flip flop) which i think is a bit overkill. Yes our guests will have made a big effort to be there but how much should you spend per guest? If H2B had his way we would have a budget of £150 for 35 guests - is that mad or is it just me? I would rather spend the money on extra bottles of wine for the guests...

It's definitely at the expensive end, but I see your H2B's point, your guests will have spent hundreds (or thousands) to come to your wedding, so whats a fiver each for a gift to them.

I'm probably seeing it more from the guests side though. People won't expect expensive favours, but it shows you really do appreciate people making the effort, taking holiday etc.

i can understand the idea of wanting to make a big gesture of nice wedding favours as your guests have made a big effort to come but what would they appreciate more? an engraved bottle opener or a bit more booze so they don't have to pay for anything else once they are out there??

We spent about £4/£4.50 on favours for our guests but we're only having a small wedding so it didn't break the bank. Could you buy the bottle openers and not get them engraved?

I would appreciate the gift but I don't think it wouldn't really make any difference to me as a guest if there was a date engraved on it. Hope that's not cheeky - I just think it might be an expense that goes unnoticed or unappreciated?

Thanks for your replies. To be honest I dont' really want the bottle openers engraved and i think people would remember it came from our wedding without it, the H2B is keen on it though! For the ladies we are doing fans (for the heat) and getting our wedding date printed on those is a lot more costly. Secretly i'm hoping they can't engrave the openers so we can have plain fans. I was just going to design a label for the box with a thank you and our date. I agree it would be nice to say thank you for making the effort of attending our wedding but will they really cherish the favour?

I think it's a nice idea, but I also agree it's going to be expensive and people don't tend to remember favours that much in general (I only remember favours from one wedding I've ever been to!)
