Subject: Readings at a civil wedding
Does one have to have readings? I ask, because there are so many things to plan and trawling the web hunting for a suitable one is not appealing. Plus half the guest don't speak English so it would not be understood. hmmmmmm. I did ask if I can have something in a non-english language, but we would have to have it translated and signed.

Thoughts?

Hello,

I am having a civil ceremony and it says that the readings are optional. Perhaps you could make you vows more personalised instead of having readings? or ask your registrar if you have to have any but I'm pretty sure if you're getting married in England then you don't have to have any.

Thanks Sophie. Can I ask if you are having any? I'm concerned that the ceremony might be too short without them. Though, on the other hand a reading would be less than 5 mins I imagine, so probably won't make a big difference.

I think it's good to have a couple of readings to make the ceremony a bit longer, but if you can't find any you like (i'm having similar issues), maybe you could use the lyrics from a song?

I am having a civil ceremony and I am having a couple of readings.

I think it will make the ceremony a little more personal and extend it a little bit. There are also some people I want included who arent part of the wedding party. They are going to be the readings.

If you were going to have a reading, what sort of reading would you like? I have been collecting a big list of civil readings so might be able to give you some inspiration!

I am also having this issue. We really didn't want any readings as it's not really our thing but then I am worried the ceremony will be too short?? x

You don't have to them, they're optional.

We weren't going to have any but when we got our marriage licence they gave us some suggestions and one of them it lovely so I think we're just having the one. It's only a few minutes, but extending it even a little is good!

Hiya sorry I lost this thread. I think we will have one or two readings but are unsure who we can ask to read them. I'm not sure my parents would want to and most people I know hate public speaking. I couldn't read them myself because I will be a blubbering mess lol. Ours will probably be poems that we love. Otherwise it will be too short a ceremony I think. Have you thought anymore about it?
