Subject: Safari - What to take?
We have just booked our honeymoon to go to Kruger National Park on a safari. The website of the place we are staying says that the miminum temperature was 3 degrees and the maximium was 30 degrees for last week. We go in 4 weeks time.
Can anyone give any advice on what to pack? How can you cater for both extremes and still adhere to the weight restriction of the luggage?

hi - we are also going to Kruger national park in 6 weeks time. I have heard that you should take/wear lots of thin layers that you can take off/put on if you are hot or cold. I havn't thought about the luggage allowance yet am just hoping i can get it all in.

The temperature extremes come from the morning game drives usually which is when it's really chilly. I used to take a woolly hat (cos they're small and save so much heat being lost) a micro fleece and gloves. Usually this was enough to tide me over during the chilly parts until the sun came up. Trousers that zip off at the knee are also handy as you can have longs in the cold and shorts at other times. Don't over pack for the safari section - you will get dusty and dirty and there is no point in wearing brand spanking new clean clothes every day - save your luggage allowance for evenings when you're back at lodges/hotels.

Haven't been to Kruger but went to the Masai Mara and agree with wraggy22 - the cold time is the morning game drives but a microfleece and trousers was fine for me. Had blankets in the jeep too. Our camp also had a free laundry service to cut down on the amount you need to pack - style really isnt the key to safari. As for the hot bit - shorts and vest top is fine - they'll give you water. I had a hat I wore all the time too. As for evenings on the safari that tends to be pretty casual too - comfy trousers and a nicer jumper/chunky cardi will be fine - I'm not sure if SA has the same mozzie problem but we had to cover up in the evening to protect from bites (not that we got any). In summary - pack casual and be prepared for daytime stuff to get dusty. You'll have an amazing time! xxx

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have just bought a pair of the trouser that unzip to become shorts. Great to hear that it is causal in the evenings so don't need to worry to much about that.

Hi
I addition to the zip off trousers/ layered cothes advice etc of the others (I totally agree) essentials are a wide rimmed sun hat, small light weight binoculars, a sturdy water bottle and depending on the amount of camping (or staying in camps where the generator is off at night) a head torch- African nights can be very dark!
If you are planning to do any amount of walking you will need sturdy closed shoes, personally I prefer at least ankle height, to keep any ground based creepy crawleys at bay!
