Has anyone had sky lanterns at their reception? we are having a winter wedding and the ceremony is in the afternoon so was thinking of having them to do between the sit-down meal and the evening guests arriving. How do they work? and do they just burn out or is there any debris to come down to earth? and do you need permission to light them at the venue/grounds? Thanks.

We were going to have them but they are quite large and I have read things in the press about them being eaten by animals when the come down (then they die - eek!) and also that it worries me that once they fly off they are a fire risk if they landed on your roof/house/garden etc.

I am gutted as I really think they look nice and we were going to have a fire poi performer too!

I would have thought you need permission from the venue to light them as if there is any damage surely if comes from their liability insurance? Check with them first.

I think they look lovely, I have open space to let them off, but we are having quite a few kids, so I would worry about them falling on them or them getting overexcited and grabbing them.

I owuld say you need permission to let them off, esp if in a place where other members of the public might be

They do look lovely though

We're not having them but saw some at the weekend-honestly thought they were ufo's at first! Wasn't until h2b said maybe they're hot air balloons that I realised what they were-they looked lovely after that!

We're having them at our wedding abroad.

They're biodegradeable so they will disintegrate over time. Definitely check with your venue that they allow them - some don't because of the fire risk e.g if you have trees/overhead wires nearby.

It will take at least two people to set one off - so consider this when you think of the quantity to buy x

You will need to check with your venue, some do not allow it. They are bio debgradeable so shouldn't be a problems when they come down. You get them in different sizes some are huge somenot sobad and some are heart shaped - awwww! We are considering one for me and him, one for parents (both sets) and then two for guests to write on before we set one off each - this is of course if our venue lets us as i think there are a few big trees around.
