Hey girls,

I REALLY want twins and i know it's nature etc but have been reading that a fertility drug called Clomid can help boost your chances as it boots fertility making you sometimes release 2 eggs....

So I just wondered if anyone has taken it?

A friend is a doctor and I have spoken to him and he is happy to give to me which is great, just wondering if anyone has taken Clomid?

I know loads of people who have taken Clomid and none of them had twins. Quite a few of them mentioned side effects of the drug so you should be careful about taking it if you don't really need to. Rather just concentrate on having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. My friends with twins have had a really rough time through their pregnancies and their lives have been turned up side down by having twins. Not sure I would set out to try and to it on purpose!

I know Clomid doesn't gaurantee twins just wanted to boost my chances so been doing lots of research and different things you can do and supplements you can take too... obviously healthy baby and health comes before everything....

Clomid is normally given to ladies who aren't ovulating.. i'm surprised at a doctor being willing to prescribe a drug to someone who doesn't need it! ( i'm not casting aspersions on you btw.. I'd love twins too, but it jsut seems unnecessary to take a drug that definitely won't guarantee twins when you don't need too)

I'm a doctor and am very surprised that a doctor is willing to give you this when there is no requirement for it. A. he shouldn't be prescribing for you at all as a friend and B. This drug is only licencd for use in women who fail to ovulate naturally. It ihas the same action as the drug tamoxifen (the one used for women with certain breast cancers) - is he really willing to put his GMC registration on the line for this. Through my job I have sat in on several infertility clinics with professor in infertility and they actually state 'twins' as a RISK associated with this drug - they actively try to prevent multiple births due to the risks associated with them. There also a moderate risk of optic disc oedema which affects your vision. Clomid increases your chance of twin to around 4 in 100 versus 2 in 100 you would naturally have. Having watched so many young women come through the clinic and never get pregnant, I wouldn't go mucking around with your perfectly functioning body - just my opinion, but just let nature take it's course and don't put your doctor friend in the position of wrongly prescribing drugs. Who knows you could get twins anyway. best of luck x

I second what MrsTwe2B has said. I am a gynae nurse and I am quite frankly shocked that a doctor friend is willing to prescribe to you a drug, putting not only his career on the line but your health too.
Clomid has side effects, it doesnt guarantee you twins, and twins are a risk to carry also.
I dont really know what else to say, but its probably better to let nature take its course and fall pregnant naturally. xx

Hi,

It's a friend who is a private doctor so that's why I will get it... I have done lots of research and Clomid is a very very common drug and the side effects are not that bad - hence why it is dished out so easily.... Twins are a risk to any pregnancy the risk of the twin thing doesn't inrease because you have taken Clomid to get them it's just a risk full stop. So whether you concieve twins naturally or with the use of a fertility drug it makes no difference. it probably won't work anyway but will help speed up the process of conception even if i don't get twins from it...

Surely it won't speed up conception as nothing can guarantee that.. it will just make an unovulating woman ovulate!

It doesn't really matter if the doctor works privately or not - he is prescribing a drug that has a licence for use in anovulatory women and private or not he is still bound by the rules of the GMC. If you have problems ovulating then fair one but as long as you're having periods you will be releasing an egg. Clomid can actually totally f**k up your cycle so you could end up worse off... I would really urge you to see a fertility specialist first - if he is happy for you to have it with no indications then crack on however I have seen many women in infertility clinic who a. have No results from clomid and B. end up with crazy cycles. It won't necessarily speed up conception either. With regards to the 'risks' associated with twins - what we were saying is that you do indeed have a higher chance of twins with clomid (4in100 vs 2in100 for those not on clomid), however all twin births have increased risk of complications which is why even IVF centres will only put back 1-2 embryos. At the end of the day, its your life, only trying to help you to think about all the implications. good luck x

Hi, i am currently on clomid and i have thought about the what if its twins situation and yes i would love to have twins but more importantly i would rather have 1 healthy child than 2 sick babies, just let it happen naturally sweetie, all things happen for a reason so if you end up with twins then let it be a natural thing that has happened to your body and not forced on you. Good Luck in whatever you decide x

Hi

I just wanted to say that you have no idea what one baby entails until you have one. It turns your whole world upside down and is blumming hard work to begin with and thats my experience with just one baby.

Also give a thought to the women who actually have to take this drug to try and get pregnant and don't just want it for silly reasons.

Sorry if you think my reply is harsh but you just sound very childish!!

I completely agree, a very insensitive post considering most woman on Clomid are struggling to have one baby!

there is actually evidence to suggest taking clomid in women who have normal cycles and decrease chance of conception - the drug cause the cervical mucus to become unfriendly to sperm and also can cause the endometrium (lining of the womb) to be too thin for implantation. Obviously these are not factors in women who are failing to ovulate at all as if they are not producing an egg then they have zero chance of conception so better to have an egg and unfriendly sperm/thin womb lining than no egg at all!

hi,

What difference does it make if i "gave thought to the women who take the drug to conceive" it won't make them conceieve! It is the most commonly used fertility drug they practically dish it out like smarties and its also super cheap which again makes it popular

All i wanted to know is if someone who had taken it had got twins thats all... I don't see how wanting twins is childish or how taking a fertility drug to get them is either? i have spoken to a doctor and will be checked over etc, if i am willing to deal with the very minimal side effects then thats my personal choice....

Mrstwe2B - apparently it only has that effect if you take 150mg or over and thats why you can't take it for more than 3 cycles, i would be on 50mg....
