Subject: Upset after doctor's app
Hi girls,
Well, I went for my first docs app tonight and now just feel totally flat. I'm 5 weeks so know that it's very early and am terrified about miscarriage on a daily basis - but the doctor just made it sound like I'm almost certainly miscarry, said that I should prob come back in 6 weeks time!!!!! and said that I won't get a scan until 16 weeks! He also said not to bother telling anyone just yet. But added that "the good news is that you're pregnant, so you'll get pregnant again". WTF - there aren't even any problems yet.
However, when I questionned him - he said that he could do my initial booking in now, so did! I just feel totally confused. I realise that they have to be realistic, but a little bit of support and encouragement would have been nice. I also don't think he's right about the scan as I know many ppl in my area that have had them at 12 weeks...
Now, we know it's early and weren't planning on telling anyone yet any way - but I now feel that there's no point even us being excited. Does this sound like a normal experience? I've now got cramps in my side and am paranoid that everytime I go to the toilet I'm going to see blood...

Hi mrstutu, no that doesnt sound like a normal experience at all.
i am with you in believing that most areas have a scan at least at 12 weeks if not before.
they should be making you aware about the facts but not making you worry uneccessarily as it isnt going to help the pregnancy,
i am 13 weeks tomorrow and panicked every day of my first 12 weeks. i had some spotting at 6 weeks and had a an early scan and i have had aches, pains, cramps back problems etc since the beginning and everything is fine.
please try not to worry. if you have ANY concerns then ring the GP surgery. When do you meet your midwife? x

My God!! Sorry, just read your post and i am not even pregnant and just TTC but I am disgusted with this! How dare he be so negative, this is meant to be one of the most happiest moments of your life and now you are just living in fear and not enjoying it! If I was you I would complain!! Will keep fingers crossed all is ok and I am sure it will be xxxx

Thank you ladies. Now that I've calmed down I know that what he said won't affect the oucome anyway, but I think he just made me more worried instead of less.
The receptionist said that the midwife would ring me to make a booking app.
Thank you for your kind comments though - you have made me feel a bit better.

He does sound a bit of an insensitive nob! lol, try not to let him upset you - am sure the midwife will be much more positive and reassuring. We all know their are terrifying risks at these early stages, we don't need it hammered home do we?!!
I had the opposite with my GP and he was talking about future birth plans etc and I was sat there thinking "oooh no too early to even think of birth" lol
Hope your experience with the midwife will be better, and take care of you and beany xx

Ok....I think the doctor has to tell you the risks....my doctor said similar stuff to me but sounded more like the legal spiel that he had to say to all pregnant women. come back is 6 weeks is a load of rubbish...you do need to book in your 12 week scan...did you tell the doc where or which hospital you planned to give birth in? once you have done that they can assign you a midwife...and it is the midwife who will phone you after 6 weeks of being pregnant to book your 12 week scan. If this didnt seem to be on the cards then i would prob give them a call back and ask.

I saw my doctor today, he said nothing about miscarriage and had me book a midwife appointment for 11th Nov, and gave me a print out of foods to avoid, and a pregnancy nhs book!
Scans are at 12 weeks, what a muppet of a doctor you must have!

Thank you so much ladies - you've really helped to put my mind at ease a bit. I def won't be seeing that doctor again!
I feel much more positive now and have realised that as long as I'm doing everything right, then I just have to relax and let Mother Nature decide what happens.
I do feel annoyed though - as I am a capable 29 year old woman and he practically had me in tears. Just think how a vulnerable young girl would have reacted. I am going to tell the midwife how insensitive he was.
Lots of love to you all and I hope that all your pregnancies are going well
