Subject: How a Divorced status is written on a Marriage Certificate
Hiya girls,

Might seem a really silly question, but when me and h2b get married what will it say on my part of the wedding cert in regards to my marital status? Obviously last time it said spinster but is it going to say divorcee this time? For some reason it's really bothering me!!

Hopefully one of you is less dense than me!! haha

xx

I think it depends where you are in the UK. I'm in Scotland and it will say on mine "Divorced" which I'm not ecstatic about, but I don't think there's anything I can do about it

Check what it says on your forms from the registrar as this is what is will show on the marriage certificate. For England it's previous marriage dissolved.

I was relieved that they've done away with Spinster apparently they now put 'single' lololol.

I was worried about this too- as my in laws to be dont know i've been married before I was hoping my h2b might of told them years ago when we first met but he never did and now time has ticked and ive not mentioned it either. They've never asked so Ive never confessed.

But it will still say previous marriage dissoved? Even if it does not say divorced - so surely they will ffind out. Is none from your 1st wedding attending your 2nd wedding?

Hi all

I'm divorced and hate the thought of either disolved or divorced on my certificate, I class myself as single as I never wanted to get married in the first place as I was pressurised into it by my mum and ex's mum!

It does seem unfair that on the marriage certificate which is about you as a couple and your future together has to have details of the past.
I myself will be getting married for the first time next year but my h2b has been married b4, I am really upset that it will be on our certificate, I never realised that.

This is my second marriage and H2B's first. We met with the Registrar last Friday and I asked the very same question about "single" or "divorced". (By the way we are in Scotland). She said it will say "divorced" and technically that is my status. Single only applies to someone who has never been married. She told us story about a gentleman who put "single" on his marriage form and it turns out he was still married. He classed himself as "single" only because he was separated from his wife. Bigamist or what! I don't like the idea of "divorced" being on my marriage schedule but I have no choice

Hiya,

I would ask at the Registry office when you have your interview. I understand there are regional differences, though I am aware there is also a difference between staff members!! Both myself and a friend have used the same registry office and yet hers states that she is "Divorced" whilst mine states "Previous Marriage Dissolved" (my husband was married previously). I know she was really upset about it on her wedding day and so I was on high alert in order to not let that happen to us!!

We had an annulment of my husband’s previous marriage and as I had gone as far as to enquire whether this would make a difference I assume they chose a more subtle term - I think “divorced” sounds horrendous!! Then again, spinster is not much better……………I actually think mine just says single!! What is it with these old bloody words?!?!?

At the end of the day it really makes no difference - it has to be on there for the paper trail purposes and nothing more. I haven't even given it a second thought to be honest, despite looking at out certificate regularly with much love and excitement!!!

I hope you all have wonderful wedding days and long and happy marriages.

Love
