most people will have had 'something bad' happen to them in the past.

I think it's the inclination to share said issue on a public message board is where the interest lies - not to say that it is wrong or right, it's just an outlet.

Maybe it says that there are more people than you thought that have "difficult" childhoods as opposed to if you've had a "difficult" childhood you're more likely to be drawn to web forums?

I reckon it's because the people who mention their pasts are more visible, the ones who don't you don't pay attention to because it's not as interesting or dramatic. No one would remember 'oh Belease, she's the one with no exciting past', but they might remember another member who'd chatted more about something they had experienced.
