Subject: How much weight gain is healthy during pregnancy?
Hi ladies

Hubby and I are trying to decide when to TTC. I am a bit of a health nut and although I am at a healthy weight, would like to get down to the lowest of my bmi/healthy weight range before trying for a baby, as I am worried about excess weight?

I have read it I am healthy and at a good weight, i should only put on about 10 kgs (a stone and a half?).

I was wondering if anyone would mind sharing their weight gain with me when pregnant, and if your doctor has given you any advice?

I exercise every day, alays high intensity so I realise i will hav to tone this down as well when pregnant. I am worried as I worked very hard to get where I am, having always been pretty overweight, and worried all the bad habits will come back and I will end up big and unhappy again.

When I say I want to get down the the lowest point ofmy BMI, i still mean 20, not 18% so all still healthy and within my healthy weight range. I am currently 22.5%.

Thank you. x

I don't have any advice but will share what happened to me. I put on 2.5 stone during my pregnancy, but most of me stayed quite slim, I just had an enormous bump! The day I got home from hospital I weighed myself and had already lost 1 stone (weight of baby, fluid, placenta etc) and now he's 6 months old I am back to original weight. I haven't dieted AT ALL - partly because I am breastfeeding so you mustn't but also becauase I wanted to go back to my original weight gradually and healthily. I do BuggyFit classes twice a week and walk a lot with the pram. Tip - breastfeeding helps you lose the weight much more quickly than if you're formula feeding!

Also, I had hyperemesis (severe morning sickness) for the first part of my pregnancy so actually lost weight at the start. Had I not had this I would have put on a lot more weight I'm sure.

Honestly hon, if I'd put on 10 stone it would all have been worth it - I can't believe how wonderful my little boy is and the weight really doesn't matter. You WILL get back to normal eventually, but the best thing is to assume it will take up to a year.

Sorry for my ramble! Good luck xx

I put on about three stone but like MrsCoco25 I had extreme morning sickness so lost a fair bit of weight in the first two months or so. 15 months on from having my son, I'm more or less the same weight as I was the week I found out I was pregnant. I haven't really made an effort to exercise, just lots of walks with the baby and trying to eat healthy food, I'd lost just over 2 stone before I fell pregnant so put all that back on and then some. Wasn't bothered in the slightest though. He was worth it : )

I'm currently 27 weeks pregnant and have put on just under a stone so far. I am expecting to put on probably the same amount again before I have the baby and I'm not concerned about it.
There is guidance in my 'What to Expect When You're Expecting' book re: healthy weight gain and it varies according to how big or small you were to begin with before pregnancy. If you nip into a bookshop and have a read of that section then it might help you. It's too long to type out here!

I think what you gain varies from person to person and from pregnancy to pregnancy. My mum gained less than a stone when she had my sister, but 4 stone when she had me. She lost all the weight from her pregnancy with me within a few months of my birth with no dieting or effort.

I don't know anyone who has ended up with permanent weight gain as a result of pregnancy.

I'm 20 weeks and have put on about a stone and a half already. My midwife is not bothered by it at all, I am petrified cos every tells me I am huge - although had dieted like mad to lose loads of weight before got pregnant and I am not eating that much, still 3 meals a day, but noticed I am snakcing more, so making every efford to snack on fruit.

I love the sound of buggy fit classes, need to find some nera me

I put on over two stone with mine, but it didn't bother me how much i put on as long as the bubs was healthy. If you want to lose the weight afterwards then you'll do it, but don't worry about that just yet, concentrate on the happy times of TTC and good luck
