Subject: Arrggghhh! Dress too big for hand luggage!!
I had my 2nd dress fitting today and took my hand luggage dress box with me so they could pack it for me, when they saw it they said my dress was too big to fit in and they wouldnt even attempt to pack it!! Arrrggghhh, I was sure it would be ok too They said I can try and squash it in myself but they wouldnt recommend it. It looks like it will have to go int the hold, I'll be stressing about it all the way there and its going to take sooo long to get to Bali, we even have to change planes which makes me worry even more. We've only got 20kg each for the suitcases too and the dress is pretty heavy, I think I'm going to have to fork out for going over the baggage allowance and its 50 USD for kg!!!!

I cant believe they wont even try it!! I can kind of understand if they think it will .....and i quote "look like a bag of %&*$# but the time we get there"!!! They say normal creases will fall out easy enough but it will be seriously creased if I squash it in the hand luggage box. Our airline is pretty good with the dimentions too - the box I bought was supposed to be large size and measures 57x37x20cm.

I'm soooo gutted!! Almost wish I'd gone for a smaller dress now.

Oh Heather and breathe! I am slightly worried this will happen to me to!
What dress have you gone for and did you get your box from the Empty Box company?
Is there no way you can take it in a suit bag and take it on board? it is worth a call to the airline otherwise you are going to have a worrying flight!

Why don't you try and see if it will fit in there?
If its not too squashed it might be worth it, just make sure its the last thing you pack and the first thing you unpack, then hang it up straight away. I have been told to hang it in the bathroom with the steam to help the creases fall out.

I am worried about just that happening to me too......

Personally, I would risk folding it into my hand luggage and then get the hotel laundry to iron he skirt in Bali or invest in a proper suit carrier and put it in that as hand luggage. The last thing you want is a worrying journey, particularly as you have to change planes. Good luck, hun x x

i put my dress in the hold and it was fine.
they put a priority tag on it and it actually came off the belt first.
i also got free 20 kg luggage allowance to take it on meaning i could take an extra suitcase to put it in.i had to phone the airline and ask for the allowance though.didnt think i would get it as we had booked flight only with the travel agents.apparently they give so many paasengers free allowance but its first come first served.
worth a try x

amazingitaly - I've gone for Hampton by Maggie Sottero (link below) - its fairly big but not massive. I actually got the box off ebay - its 1cm under the allowed dimensions and was the biggest one I could find!!
The airline have said we can take it in the garment bag but it would still have to fold to the same dimensions as the box that it apparently wont fit into. I'm quite reluctant to try and force it into the box as it will be in there for about 24 hours and I dont want to crease it really badly. I dont think I'd try the hotel to try and iron it either - imagine if they somehow ruined it, melted the beading etc. I'd rather try and let them fall out in a steamy bathroom but that wont work if its super creased.
I'll get my H2B to phone the airline but not holding out much hope at this late stage.
Just cant believe it, I think I'll have to accept that its going to have to go in the hold, I know the chances of it going missing are pretty slim but I'll just be so stressed for the whole journey there and back worryinbg about it.
BLK bride - I would think your (v gorgeous) dress should fit in ok from the pic you posted of it, the shop said it would have been fine for a smaller dress to go in, I really think yours should be ok, looks like there's less material to it compare with mime.
Feeling soo rubbish today, I've got enough to stress about without this too Drowned my sorrows last night and now have a hangover to top it off, I never learn, lol.

who are you flying with when I took my dress to St Lucia. no one batted a eyelid they wre all happy for me, and never tried to take it off me to weightit, or measure it,if you put it in a suit carrier and carry it over your arm,as your hand luggage, if would be a very bad person who would take it off you and cram it into a luggage size check machine to weigh it or its dimentions, you can either hang it on the plane or lay it flat but doubled over in the overhead locker near you so that you can keep an eyeon it case anyone put anything on top of it,most people are happy for you tell anyone that will listen that it is your wedding dres and I am sure they will be helpful.

Hi
Im cabin crew and I would recommend you carry it in a suit carrier type bag. Depending on who you are flying with they may let you put it flat in the overhead locker. Some older aircraft have wardrobes on them too so try and find out from the airline. I've not chosen my dress yet so will prob be in the same situation this time next yr!x

I have seen loads of brides and grooms carry their dress and suits this way,in a bag over their arm, sometimes two bridal bags so that the groom cannot see the dress or any detail on it,

oh no,i hope you get it sorted, iam thinking my dress is going to be to big for one of them boxes,so mine will have to go in the hold as well and we have a connecting flight as well so i totaly understand how your going to be feeling but a lot of ppl have put there dresses in the hold and its been ok.

We're flying with Singapore Airlines so probably different to everyone else I keep thinking should I just carry it on in a garment bag but if I'm worried that when I get to the end of it they might say its looks too big to squash down to the hand luggage dimensions and then ofcourse its too late because you've checked in all your other suitcases, plus you'd need an extra suitcase just for the dress if they said that I had to put it in the hold. I'm not sure I dare risk it just incase, the airline simply say it has to fold to a certain dimension if we take it on as a garment bag but I can only do that by really squashing the dress down and if I'm going to have to do that I might as well squash it into the box I bought that will no probably leave it horrendously creased.

Why is nothing ever simple!! Logic tells me the hold should be fine but I just keep thinking what if the worst happens. Perhaps after a few drinks on the plane I'll relax, lol!!!
