Subject: Cheapest place for malarone
Hi

I am looking at buying malarone for our honeymoon. The doctors surgery has quoted us £2.79 a tablet. Where has everyone bought their malarone from and where was the cheapest??

Thanks
xx

Hi,

I have been told that boots is the cheapest place to get it from, but when I last looked there online prescription system was down so I was unable to check, but have a look.

Ask on tripadvisor might be better.

Im guesing yoiu need malaria tablets too?

From Lloyds you can get both Malarone and Doxycycline. The maralone is £2.24 per tablet and the Dox is 16p a tablet.

For me it worked out to be £47 pp malarone or £6.72 pp dox.... have your docs told you about the Dox at all? xx

Thanks for your replies. I'll try tripasvisor!

Yes i'll need malaria tablets. We're going to Borneo as part of our honeymoon. The docs hasn't told me anything about dox, they had told me to get Chloroquine and Proguanil but after reading reviews about malarone - i think that's the best one available.
I'm trying to get my docs to write me out a prescription for malarone but its like getting blood our of a stone with my surgery!

Oh right, we need some for Kenya.
My doc explained that the Dox has to be taken for longer so if your not good at remembering to take tablets then dont use these, but they are extremely cheap in comparrison to the others and has been around for ages.
Malarone is a fairly new drug, and its alot more expensive, but you take 1/2 the amount of pills, so brilliant if you aren't great.

My doc also suggested that the H2B and I have the same kind so we can remind each other every day. I havent heard of the others you mentioned but good luck. Let me know if you do get them cheap

Hi,
I'm a pharmacist, but have never taken any anti-malarials personally... however, my advice would be:

Malarone: v.expensive, but most convenient, as you only take it from a couple of days before you go, and continue until a week after you get back.

Lariam: can make you go bonkers! AVOID!!!

Doxycycline: cheap, but you take it for 4 weeks after you get back as well as before you go and while you're there, and it can make you extra-sensitive to sunlight - not good as places that have malaria also usually have lots of sun!!!

Proguanil and Chloroquine: not suitable for all areas, you have to take before, during and for 4 weeks after, 2 diff tabs to remember (1 lot daily, the others weekly), but quite cheap and the only ones you don't need a prescription for.

As a proportion of your honeymoon costs, the cost of your anti-malarials is likely to be fairly tiny - get the best, not the cheapest!
Pop into any pharmacy with your itinerary and they'll be happy to advise you and give you a quote on price!
