Are there any teachers out there who have managed to prepare for their wedding with just a day off school beforehand? We haven't set the date yet, but were looking to the Easter bank holiday Monday next year. Unfortunately due to no availability of our preferred venue on bank holidays and a Catholic wedding so Easter weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun) is a no go, it looks like we may have to consider the day after I break up! Eeek! I had imagined having a week to prepare and wind down from school before the biggest day of my life! Any advice/experience of doing this would be really great!:\?:\?

We are getting married the day after my H2B breaks up from school and he isn't pleased!!! He thinks he will just be curled up in a ball in the corner all day on the Friday... lol.

I am only managing to have one day off before the wedding due to holiday allowance but am hoping as long as I am organised it should be ok

I am a teacher and I am getting married a week on Saturday. I have managed to wangle Thursday and Friday off school so that 1) I can wind down before the big day and 2) so that I have the time to sort out any problems that might occur closer in those last two days. I wanted to get married closer to the easter holidays but unfortunately everything was booked up by the time we wanted to book (probably other teachers!). If things carry on like they have for the past few weeks then I think we will be fine just having a day or so off before the wedding, however, if anything goes off plan then I can see me being very stressed towards the end of next week.

I can update you in a week or sos time to tell you my experience of having little time off before the wedding x

My wedding for 2011 is the other way around - I managed to book the Sunday of May day bank holiday which falls at the end of our LA easter holidays next year, means I have 2 weeks to prepare before hand, but have to go back to school after only one day as a newly wed on the Tuesday! I'm going to try and take some leave (even if it is unpaid) so I don't have to crash back to reality quite so quickly!

Don't mean to be rude but why do you need days off before you get married? Surely you would have sorted everything by then? All you will be doing if fretting over silly little things and twiddling your thumbs...best to keep busy. It's not just teachers, most peopl find it hard to get time off especilally if your booking the following week off 4 honeymoon,

That would be great Kittywitty! So are you having to go back to school straight after?
There are definitely pitfalls to these 13 weeks, they're not all everybody else makes them out to be!

There's no way I could have done it - I'm always a wreck at the end of term!

An honest view from a friend of mine who did this is that she wished she'd given herself more time in between school and the wedding but I suppose it also depends on how organised you are - I'm really not!x

I work shifts and i get married on a saturday...finish a run of four nightshifts on the friday morning so my system will still be totally out of whack the next day. Going to have to try and get at least one night off before to sort myself out sleepwise before the big day!

I'm a teacher getting married in April 2011 on the first day of the Easter holidays. I really wanted 2 weeks to go on honeymoon and thats why I plumped for then. Also the venue we are getting married at is a garden and bits of it are open to the public so It would be quieter then than the middle week which is bank holiday Monday. When was deciding did a quick poll of teacher friends 50% who said they would rather have the time after and 50% who said that they would rather have the time before off!!! I figure that I'll have the previous day off (which I'm pretty sure you are entitled to but it might be unpaid) and If i was off all week I'd just be getting stressed anyway. Have also decided that I am going to try and finish at least earliyish (ie 3:45 ish) all week and treat myself after school to little things like a facial etc. Also 6 weeks before is 1/2 term and should be able to get lots sorted out then. I appreciate its a hard decision though cause I ummed and ahhed about it for a while.

Thanks Katyh, had a nice chat with my Head and line manager today who are leaning towards shuffling PPA around and other stuff to maybe give me a day or 2, so perhaps that first Saturday is a possibility now... x

Hey! I'm a teacher, getting married first day of Easter hols next year and hoping and praying that my HT will be compassionate and give me a days unpaid leave on the Friday (haven't broached the subject yet!).

I think most teachers would agree that the general feeling at the end of a term is one of nervous exhaustion and fatigue - not good when mixed with over-excitement and anxiety!

Unfortunately we had the choice of the first weekend of the hols or the last, and I'm sure you'll all agree that going straight back to school after the wedding would be the biggest come-down ever!

I like the idea of leaving school at 3.45 everyday that last week to treat myself and de-stress, though not sure my HT would agree...

charli159 - I think the biggest issue is the amount of work we bring home, so evenings aren't as readily available for doing last minute stuff as they would be in other professions. Not sure about anyone else but it's not unusual for me to be working still at 9.30pm. One extra day before the wedding would just give you that little margin of error just incase anything came up, to get hair/nails etc done, or at the very least to give you a little bit of wind down time for yourself before all the excitement begins.

i think it goes for most people, not just teachers. most of my friends seem to be teachers now and i know they work damn hard but then so does everyone else i know.

meant to say i can totally see the need for a few days beforehand to get organised, i wouldnt want to be trying to get out of work on a friday when i was getting married the next day, but 13 weeks hols gives scope or that. my friends who are both teachers got married last weekend in July so they had plenty of time before and after. is there a reason you want to do it at easter?
