Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh.

So. Ladies. I've now tried on 41 dresses. That's why i've been AWOL. I've either been at work or trying on frocks. As many of you know - i've had my foolish heart set on a short wedding dress. So i've tried on every short wedding dress in a 100-mile radius now. Maybe 150 miles! And guess what?

They don't look all that fab on me!

I think i've found a dress I adore - it's by Suzanne Neville & it's called 'Fontaines'. I can't post a pic as her site is all flash player (grrr) but it's under the Bourgeois Collection & is the 6th dress along on the 2nd row.

http://www.suzanneneville.com/flash.php

It takes about 2 stone off me & my future MIL almost cried when she saw me in it - these are good things, no?! The only problem is that it takes 4mth to make & 2mth for alterations after it arrives. Which means that I need to order it in May. But my mum is so busy with her own wedding that I don't know how to get her to see me in it before I order it. Is it reasonable to just ring her & ask her really nicely to come down for a day or 2 so she can see it & I can get her opinion?

The only problem is that we both work shifts & we live 5-6 hrs apart. & i've got a dissertation due in at the end of April. Eeeek. And she gets married mid-May. It's not like a day out.... nightmare.

But we're really close, so she 'has' to be there to see the dress... right?! Anyone else not have their mum there?

2mth for alterations, wow that sounds alot. i think your mum would be fine with that tho especially as she probs knows how stressfull planning a wedding is at the mo. i'm not having my mum there to pick my dress with me as she works different to me and also she lives a trekk away, not as far as yours tho. you could ask her for her opinions and maybe show her a pic online, good luck hun hope you get it sortedx

I didn't have anyone with me when I chose the dress. My mum lives in another country and is very ill so it was impossible. But we did bring the wedding forward for her so I don't think she minded too much, especially as no-one saw the dress.
I think you should talk to her and ask her to be honest with you about how she feels. You could say that you love the dress, but would love her opinion on it but really the time frame is tight. Ask her to tell you how she feels about being there or not - maybe she can make it to the fittings etc. Let's face it, after 41 dresses, you kinda know you are going to get this one as it seems to be the one, whether she sees it first or not

Thanks for the advice ladies... i'll ring her this week & see what she thinks. Maybe she can even get a few days off & I can go up & meet her at a showroom near her house.

Mrs Neno - i'm so sorry your mum is poorly, did she manage to enjoy your wedding day?

Girlies, the dress is. Wait for it. £2,155.

I know. Madness.

I have found it 2nd hand for £1,400 but alterations would run to a minimum of £300 on it plus over £100 in travel to get to where it is... leaving me with a minimum spend of £1,800 on a 2nd hand frock. I think not.

Will have to have a long think I reckon. H2B said 'it's a f*ck load of money for a frock Lizzie' - a fair point. Then we had a brief discussion but frank about his outrageously expensive taste in (a) bikes & (b) retro chairs. Hum

Thanks UkMidwife - she did indeed get to the wedding. She went into kidney failure last year after my dad died and iin May she was given 3 months to a year. Well 2 weeks before the wedding she got a series of infections and she almost died but was determined to make it to the wedding. She was let out of hospital for it and amazed everyone by being awake from 3am from excitement right through to midnight after the wedding. She still talks about what a great day it was.
Unfortunately she is back in hospital as her weight has fallen dangerously low to 35kg and she is resisting being tube fed but we live in hope.
My only regret about the whole day is my wedding dress - I was ripped off by a shop here who used my position against me and I was not entirely happy with it.
I think if you can afford your dream dress then go for it - you can always sell it afterwards and as you've seen they go for quite a bit.
Use that in your negotiation with H2B!

Gosh i'm so sorry about your mum... I hope she manages to tolerate tube feeding - it will remove some of the stress of eating for her hopefully. It must be really frightening for her. You'll let us know how she gets on, won't you?

Thanks for putting this daft 'problem' into perspective for me. Thinking of you & your family x

Oh crap - I didn't mean to turn this into all about me - just saying that make the right dress choice as it's a bit of a bummer if you are thinking what if on the day or ever after. You can always sell it to make back the some of the outlay.
Really, please enjoy the dress shopping and everything else
Slinking off now as feeling shame of ruining your thread.....
