Subject: Friends Expectations - the dress
Hi Ladies
I just need some advice as to what everyone else thinks: I know that all my friends expect me to have a "designer" dress for my wedding, as this is just what happens amoungst us girls, and I am sure many can relate, anyway I searched and searched and in the end - to my surprise this dress ended up being "the one" for me:
anyway I love it, but I know it is not the kind of dress my friends are expecting me to wear, I mean it is not from one of the fancy designers so many of my friends have been too.... so I am a almost keeping it a secret as to where it is from and how much it cost, I know this is really stupid but I don't want them thinking I am getting married in a cheap dress!!
Oh no, do you ladies think its pretty? I always wanted a princess dress, (a big one). I have dark hair like the model (but it will be up) and have ordered the dress in a size 8 and am SOOOO excited about wearing it.
Just worried about the snobby fashionista friends!!

That dress is lovely. Who cares what you spend on things, it's what you make of the day that counts. Can I be cheeky and ask how much you are paying for it? It doesn't look cheap at all

Thanks ladies - I love it too!!
I think paid around 1800 australian dollars but that included earrings and my bridcage veil headpiece with crystal side hairclips (it was too long ago now and after I decided it was "the one" my father took over so now I cannot remember for sure! - there were too many dresses), which is about £1000 ish - so not that cheap really.

the main thing is how you look and feel in in, you could spend thousands of pounds on a dress just for the sake of it being designer, you know when its 'the one'. I am keeping my dress a secret as i like the tradition so none of my friends no how much it cost or where its from, i like the idea of everyone seeing it for the first time as i walk up the aisle. x

That's still not cheap for a dress, and it does look amazing. Tell them that you have no idea of the price tag as you told your dad you loved it and he just went ahead and told you he would take care of it.

Yvonneberry ... it's a lovely dress - and if you want it - then by golly have it.
I was in the same situation when I was dress hunting - and my friends knew that budget was not an issue but thought they were helping by emailing the latest Wangs, the CCs, and the other haute couture creations that were "SO that season".
I went into shops and tried frocks on blind - didn't care/ want to know the designer. I even ended up liking a maggie - the Gwyneth ... which was sadly discontinued.. but did not want the last remaining sample. My inner snob coming out! ha ha
I actually found my dress by a random online search - starting with designers/dress makers ... I got as far as "A" - Amanda Wyatt ... saw what I thought was me - Yasmin design - I made appointments with shops that sold this particular design (which is currently on the front cover of YAYW mag March edition btw!) . I went with my CBM as she knew I was not fussed by labels, names and brands when it came to dress shopping.
For a giggle and to show a bit of willing and to prove a point - I did look at Wangs .... please.... I do not need a dress that makes my bum look bigger! I never "Get" her use of ribbon halfway down the hips, or her need to cut a fishtail - so you are more Blue Whale than mermaid! ha ha . Nothing against these styles - but you do wonder what these designers are thinking sometimes! And the more expensive / designer the dress does not equate to it beng the best for everyone.
Anyway - None of my "designer / brand obsessed" friends were told what the dress was - as it was my dress. I went through the usual wobbles, and in the end the original design was altered by me - so I had the off the peg / unique design rolled into one. The straps itched like buggery and were removed and stiched into the front design/ neckline.
Please don't let what your friends think be the rudder that steers your dress and other wedding plans. Whose day is it? Yours or theirs?
Have fun swishing in YOUR Maggie on YOUR special day xxx
