Subject: Anyone making there own wedding cake?
Hi all

I'm flabbergasted at the price of cake! Its the only thing we have not sorted for our June wedding and we are contemplating making our own now after much shopping around and quotes (quotes ranged from 500-240: 240 being for a basic 3 tier cake!!) Is anyone else thinking of doing this or has done this? Any pictures? Or does anyone know of a decent cake maker in the north east? Northumberland/North Tyneside/Hartlepool?

Hi

I'm having a four tier cake for 180 from classic-cakes.

She's lovely and really helpful!

I am making my own cakes. Going to have cupcakes (lemon sponge, chocolate chip and carrot cake) and then a fruitcake top cutting cake that will be similar to this which is a cake i made for mothers day. Except the yellow will be replaced with purple and without the little daisys along the bottom.

EmmyLou that looks fab! My mam is a little concerned we won't do a good job and we will have everything else to worry about on the days leading upto the wedding so she is suggesting marks and spencers, but thats still around the £200plus mark..Dont get me wrong, i have the money aside for a cake but i just begrudge forking out so much on something for the photos really, as its all being cut up for the evening reception.

If you search around you will find smeone cheaper. You could always just have a polystyrene cake covered and then a much simpler cake that is cut up and served in the background. How many guests and what type of cake did you want?

I've found that if you search for "celebration cakes" rather than wedding you get almost identical cakes for a third of the price! On one site I found the EXACT SAME cake for £250 as a wedding cake and £100 as a birthday cake!

You could get a cheap white cake from a supermarket and dress it up, or a small but nice "celebration" cake, and then buy separate cutting cake. I know Marks do cutting cakes that serve around 20 people for about £12 I think. Marks also have a lovely pink "birthday" cake which is like stacked presents for £40!

Soon2bMrs!- Your cake is simply stunning!! Could you please let me know what size cake tins you need and where can they be bought from? I am thinking of enrolling on a cake decorating course.

I'm making my own cake. If you like fruit cake, it can be made up to a year in advance. Ask about your friends and see if any of their Grans or Mum's are good at icing. It saves a fortune and you can still get the cake you want if you find a picture from the internet and copy it.

Hi Blubb, the top layer is a 6 inch then 8, 10,12,14.. I had the tins myself as I make cakes as a hobby.. apart from the 14inch one which i borrowed from a friend, we had to get the largest board made as we wanted a 22inch board!! You can get the tins on the internet or habby craft but check if you have a local bakers you can hire them from first as they can be very expensive!! Mail me if you need any help!!
