We are travelling up to Scotland from England to get married (near Loch Goil) in August. Rather than dashing off somewhere else on honeymoon we are toying with the idea of staying in Scotland for a week or two. Does anyone have any ideas for a romantic break? Ideas I have come up with are renting a luxury cottage somewhere, would love to go seal or whale watching (don't know know if there is anywhere in August that would have boat trips out).
We will be driving up so will have a car.
Any ideas at all would be gratefully received. I don't know Scotland at all so don't know where to start!

Hi there! well you've came to the right place then hbpurple! I actually got engaged where you are talking about, he took me a drive up near the trossachs and popped the question, its one of my favourite places! If you are driving up from England (where abouts exactly) then I would suggest maybe stopping of in Loch Lomand area, its beautiful there. My mum, dad, auntie and uncle are staying in Aberfeldy in Perthshire. They are staying in a cottage in a site called Glengoulandie. Me and h2b are actually going up to stay one of the nights. I would really recommend the Scottish Highlands, just beautiful and so romantic!
Oh, you should go to the Edinburgh Tattoo!
Sorry I'm getting a bit excited!
Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi
Loch Lomond is lovely. I would also recommend the north west coast. A cottage on Skye would be very romantic, Skye is definitlely one of my favourite islands.
I think the Isle of Mull is good for seal and whale (if you're lucky) watching.
Just beware the scottish midge in August and take good insect repellent!

Hi Emma
We live in Hampshire - it took us about 9 hours to drive up last time. We are getting married in a lodge next to Loch Goil - I'd never been to Scotland before and was amazed by how beautiful it is there. It seems a shame to leave straight after getting married. I've had a quick look at whale watching trips which look great too.

Thanks - sounds lovely and romantic, I'll have a look at Skye and Mull. I am a little worried about the midgies, I think I will have to put midge repellent in the guests goody bags!

Hey, AVON skin so soft in Woodland Fresh fragrance does wonders for the midgies lol. We camped at Fort William in Sept last year and they stayed well clear. Not the nicest of smells but it def works xxx

Hi hbpurple,
I too live in Hampshire but used to live in the Highlands of Scotland. It is STUNNING up there, so much to do and see. If you want to see Dolphins and Seals and POSSIBLY whales then I can recommend a great company that sail out on the Moray Firth. I've been 3 times and always seen dolphins and seals, but never the whales - they are pretty elusive. Although you might have more luck! The company is based in Cromarty which is a beautiful little seaside village. Here is a link to their website:

You could base yourselves somewhere near Inverness and then have the best of both worlds? Lovely city but only a short drive to remoteness!

Hi hbpurple
Have a look at www.wildsidelodges.com
H2B and I have stayed there a couple of times (you have to stay in one of the the 3 bed lodges - they are the nicest!) and it is great. Open fire, jacuzzi bath and a choice of rooms! So cozy and very nicely decorated.
The lodges are on the outskirts of loch ness. There is a little country pub a 5/10 minute walk from the lodges too so a little bit of civilisation but not much! We loved it and would highly recommend it.

Always thought that Blue Reef Cottages look like a fab place for a Scottish honeymoon. They are on Harris though, so maybe a bit far away, but you can do whale watching or trips to St Kilda from there too.

I travel all over the Scottish countryside with work. Therefore luxury isn't really something I know about, but I am good with ideas. If you want really remote I would head for the outer hebrides, harris or uist, amazing beaches if you get the weather. you can also feel pretty remote on Skye and Mull depending on where you stay and all these islands have good wildlife watching experiences nearby. Orkney is great, loads to go and see. Unfortunately all of these bar Skye will involve a ferry trip which can make things costly. On mainland I would recommend Oban or Fort William as nice towns and possibly good bases for some exploring but these are bigger towns and not remote. Aviemore is also really nice if you're into walking and your not near water but have ospreys and the highland wildlife park nearby.

My H2B and I have booked a superior room (the turret room!) at the Sligachan Hotel on Skye for our honeymoon. The room is overlooking both the red and black Cuillin, and is ideally situated for lots of wonderful walks - and beaches! We're both keen hillwalkers, so if the weather is good, we'll get a couple of mountains ticked off, also want to go mountain biking. If the weather is awful, we'll explore the craft shops and tearooms - and possibly spend some long, lazy mornings in bed..... ;o)
