Just wondering if any of you lovely ladies have ventured out to India to get wedding gear?
I initially had no intention whatsoever to go as i thought i have more control over here for what I can get...but even the suits are starting from £300 for a decent one its really making me think twice! So i'm thinking of a 7-10 day trip to India to make me purchases...but dont know if financially its feasible.
My wedding outfit i wanna get from here as i dont want that being rushed but the rest of my outfits possibly from there....
Whereabouts in India will you be going? We did majority of our shopping from Mumbai and some from Indore (but then we also got married in India), so if its either of these two places, then i'll be happy to help.
hey! I came back yesterday after a very stressful 3 weeks. I went to the punjab to get everything, including my wedding lengha which got messed up so i now have two one from frontier which is lovely and the other from nakodar which is nice, but my heart is not in it anymore.
the rest of my clothes are really nice, although most of them were unstitiched. i went to jallandhar to nagpals which had some gorgeous readymades, but the problem is always in the fitting, in that they can never get it to fit you!!
ready mades are def cheaper over there but then if they dont fit you properly around the bust and waist i wouldn't get it unless the embroidery was minimal in those areas and no zip on the side ofcourse.
for a nice suit i would say that you can get a nice unstitched for aroun Rs6000, but be warned everywhere is fixed price now and some people don't haggle they will just tell you take it or leave.
whereabouts in india are you thinking of going? whens the big day?
I went to India too for my shopping .. i went to Delhi and you do certainly get a good choice, only thing i would say is that you need pleanty of time. All the shops i bought ready made stuff from, offered a free fitting service but it takes time (a couple of days usually) Getting unstiched again, you need a good tailor and they can take time to make. Just shopping and choosing takes time though over there!
Overall, i would say it is worth going if you need to get a lot of stuff and if you have time.
As HHKSANDHU said, all the big stores have fixed prices ... you may be able to get a 10/15% discount if ur lucky.
Miss Giggles, im going to Delhi in April, and hoping to get three main bridal outfits from there (im having three receptions...dont ask..but yes I am mental lol!) and all the rest of my suits and sarees etc as well. Do you have any advice on where to shop for the best bridal outfits? I also want a beautiful choora, which shop is best for that? I hear Karol Bagh is generally the best for bridal, but which shops in particular?
Im spending most of my time in Delhi, but will also be in Punjab for about 4 days. So any advice would be appreciated.
Sorry for hijacking the thread! Thanks in advance!
Delhi is great for shopping, i hope you have pleanty time!
Yeah, karol bagh is a good market quite a lot of shops there. The most renowned ones are Bombay Selections, Meena bazar, Frontier Bazar and another but i cant remember that name. All have really good stuff. i bought my main outfit from Bombay Selection (though from their branch in Rajouri Garden Market). They had a lot of choice, i have heard really good things about frontier too esp their service.
There is also a fantastic store called CTC Mall in an area calle moti nagar. It isnt a "mall" more a department store, but the service and choice there is great. The really good thing there is all the lenghas are stitched soo you can properly try them on and really get a feel for what you want. They also have loads of lovely ready made suits and sarees etc as well as acessories .. it is the ultimate bride shop! There arent any other shops around it though so it is a trip there just for that one store though i definatley think its worth going. Not far from there is a market called Rajouri Garden. theres one shop there called shakuntalan which has gorgeous clothes (NOT MUCH IN THE WAY OF TRADITIONAL BRIDAL, BUT really lovely lovely things)
For your Chura, there are loads of shops that stock them usually the same ones that stock artifical bridal jewellery. I just went into a random shop and found one i liked. There are lots now with like diamante stones in which look fab.
Theres and old shopping area called Chandhi Chowk where there are loads of shops selling wedding stuff, like chura, kalire, all the fancy trays, boxes, little gift bags and stuff. Its a really busy area and there are loads of little lanes runnung of the main road, you have to find the one known as cannari bazar (sp?) which is where all those shops are.
Not sire what other info you need, but feel free to email if you like. I can let u know where i got invites etc too if you need to know.
What brilliant info! Thanks soooooooooo much Miss Giggles!
I have heard of CTC Mall, and that its definitley worth a visit there, and alot of people have reccommended frontiers in Delhi too! I cant wait to get there! Its sooo exciting!
We are going for two weeks, but out of that 4 days will be in Punjab. Im hoping that I get the three main heavy lenghe, a nice chura, possibly some suits and sarees in Delhi. but mainly the first two. I maybe able to get the rest (bangles, jewellery sets etc) in punjab. I know im cutting it fine, but its my folks, they are adamant to go to Punjab as we have family there, who we need to see.
If you could reccommend a good card shop, that would be be the best!
Ooo Delhi seems like the place to go!
I was going to go to Phagwara, as I will be staying in Janandhar and its the closest basically...but now i am swaying to going to Delhi...
I seen this dress i want from Frontiers which is partially why i wanna go Phagwara and get it! I dont know where to start, i'm really worried about rushing my wedding outfit and as i dont fit into the 'standard sizes' (i'm a fatty lol) was going to purchase my bridal outfit from the UK so that aint rushed but get everything else from over there, I wanna be in India for a max 10 days - me mother will bring the rest of the stuff back...hopefully!
I picked up my lengha from here as I didn't want all the hassle if they messed it up over there. For you 7-10 days would definitely not be enough time to get your lengha stitched there so it's good you're thinking of getting it here.
PUNJAB
My mum and dad just got back from a two week stint in India and managed to get the invites, my jewellery and choora, the haars, maya stuff, jaggos, some outfits for me, mum's pink suit for the wedding day and my brother and fiance's sherwanis. This was mainly done in Phagwara and overall, the trip was pretty successful. My invites and outfits look beautiful and my brother's sherwani and mum's suit are amazing.
The outfits were picked up from Frontier (with one of my suits ordered from a shop near to Frontier) in Phagwara. I have to warn you they will always tell you two weeks is not long enough for certain outfits. Case in point: my fiance's sherwani, although gorgeous, is too small on the shoulders (in spite of us giving them the measurements!). My parents would have measured the shoulders when they viewed the outfit but Frontier ran out of time and had to get someone to drop it off to my parents just before they were due to go to the airport. My parents only got a chance to look at the stuff when they got back to London and having realised my fiance's sherwani is too small, they are now having to send it to India with a friend to get fixed by Frontier. Seriously stressful (especially given my wedding is less than three months away).
My jewellery and choora are incredible though. The jewellery was based on a design that I had seen here that would have cost over £500 here but only cost £90 there. The shop is called something along the lines of "Baba ta Poti di Hati".
DELHI
Karol Bagh is a great place to pick up outfits and I cannot stress the fantastic choice and value offered by Anarkali. The shop is near to a gurdwara on a turning off the main strip in Karol Bagh. Apparently, the locals love to get their wedding lenghas and saris from there. The shop looks small and a little rundown but I cannot stress how brilliant the place is, No trip to Delhi is complete without going there,
If you are picking up invites, I have heard the best place to go is Chandni Chowk. There are supposed to be lines and lines of invite shops.
I have heard great things about CTC mall although I have never been myself.
I have to say I don't really know about accessories but I would say that the accessories we have picked up for me so far from Phagwara are really good. My mum has also picked up really nice jewellery from Jallundar.
I think Delhi is great but without knowing where to go, it can be a bit of a waste of time.
n all the markets there are shops that sell nice jewlery and accessories .. i saw loads of nice things in the different shops. I intended to get quite a light weddign set, but ended up with something heavier cause in one shop i went to i just loved it as soon as i saw it.Chura you can get in soo many accessory/jewellery shops ... when they get them all out to show you, they all look really nice, I found it so hard to choose. I got mine just from a tiny artifical jewellery shop in a market calle Tilak nagar, but you can get from canari bazar in chandhi chawk and in Karol bagh try Gaffar market.
It really is down to personal taste though. CTC has got all the accessories and really pretty ones, but they are far more expensive there than you would pay in the smaller shops.
