As you are all aware, advertising your business or soliciting for trade is not allowed in the forum. This has taken various forms both explicit and subtle.
Advertising in the forum is any method by which your own, a friend’s or family member’s business is promoted. This can be by simply saying ‘I am a ……. and would be happy to help anyone needing my services’ through to having a site name saying ‘name makeupartist’ ‘name wedding planner’ or even ‘name.co.uk’. In other words, if you promote a site or business to which you have a personal relationship link eg owner, employee, family member, friend etc.
Soliciting is where as a professional person you offer advice but make it plain what your profession is eg “I am a make-up artist….”, “as a make-up artist….” “Being a wedding planner I would advise….”. Again there is a personal relationship link involved.
One of the subtle ways of advertising/soliciting in the forum is using a business name or profession as part of the site name. This is still considered a form of advertising. I have already contacted a large number of people whose site name contain their business or profession and asked them to change it. Some have complied, some have not. As a consequence, Helen and I have no choice but to say that in future any site names that have a profession or business element to them will be asked to change that name. If they do not comply within a week, the name will be changed by Helen or me. While I appreciate that many of you offer advice with no thought of personal gain, there is one rule for all and site names must not refer to a business or profession or contain anything that may be considered a form of soliciting for trade.
You should be aware that referrals are acceptable. A referral is where you make known a business, which from personal experience, offers a good service but to which you have no other link than that of a client."
