Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara, £19
The verdict:

My gripe with waterproof mascara is that I can’t get the volume I desire, leaving my lashes a little lackluster. Not the case with this baby. My lashes were just as thick, if not thicker, than with my normal mascara – someone even asked if I was wearing extensions!

I took a bath to test the water resistance and while they did clump together a little in the water, I’m completely confident it would stand up to tears.

Removal was fine too, with an oil remover it came off no trouble at all.
Urban Decay Cannonball Ultra Waterproof Mascara, £15.50
The verdict:

This is up there in my top five all-time fave mascaras! The wand gave great all-over coverage and it wasn’t too thick or lumpy – resulting in a good daytime look, although better on volume than length.

I have sensitive eyes and this didn’t agitate them at all.

I tested it when skiing, so goggles on and off constantly, in snowy conditions – and I’m pleased to say no smudging at all. I will certainly be buying this product again.
Yves Saint Laurent Luxurious Waterproof Mascara, £25
The verdict:

I was immediately a fan of this because the application was super easy. It feathered my lashes out perfectly and lasted the full day at work, and left my eyes looking fresh and pretty ten hours after I initially applied it.

I carried out a cry test whilst preparing dinner, cutting the world’s most emotional vegetable; two red onions. The mascara held up really well and didn’t even create the slightest black smudge underneath my eye.

Showering was the real test, and amazingly the YSL waterproof mascara passed with flying colours.

It was also super easy to remove with soft make-up wipes and didn’t feel dry at all.
Bobbi Brown No Smudge Mascara, £20
The verdict:

I achieved decent curl and coverage, but the mirror doesn’t lie – my lashes lacked the oomph they get from my regular mascara.

However, I checked the Bobbi Brown website and discovered that you can layer it over another formula, to add the waterproof benefits to your usual look. Problem solved!

As for water resistance, there was zero transfer, however much my eyes overflowed – I’m seriously impressed.

Removal wise, I had to double-cleanse to get rid of every last sooty shred from my lashes, but this is a small price to pay for such excellent staying power.
Clarins Truly Waterproof Mascara, £21.50
I was wary of the thick brush and dark liquid, but ultimately delighted by the long, luscious lashes this created that garnered several compliments.

However, the real test came with my evening swim. I abandoned my goggles and dove in, expecting panda eyes and stinging sensations. After half an hour I checked the mirror and incredibly only had a subtle shadow framing my bottom lashes – a real success!

The only negative was how difficult it was to take off: even after using a variety of eye make up removal methods my eyelashes still felt slightly coated and I was forced to peel off the mascara (sacrificing a few lashes in the process).
Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara, £17.50
The verdict:

This mascara comes in Clinique’s signature green and silver packaging, which would look great in your morning-of-the-wedding photos.

The long thick mascara brush made it easy to apply and added a well-defined look to my lashes and added lots of volume and length without clumping.

The mascara did not budge with water so if you were to shed a few tears on your big day, you know it would stay put.

As with most waterproof mascaras it was a little difficult to remove but it does come off easily when using an oil-based eye makeup remover.
Fairydrops Scandal Queen Mascara Water Resistant, £18.50
The verdict:

I put this mascara to the ultimate crying test: watching Bambi. I was a mess by the end but my eyelashes stayed perfect.

I tested it further with a soak in the bath and it still stayed on, creating smokiness around the eyes, which I would definitely rock on a night out!

It was great for creating volume and length; I’m lacking in the lash department, but the three-ball bendy brush added length and thickness to my little lashes.

It was tricky to remove with traditional cream, but with an oil remover it came off in no time.

If you feel that no mascara will be able to withstand the amount of tears you're going to cry, check out our article on eyelash extensions for your wedding day - totally tear proof!
