Hiring or buying your wedding suit
Is it worth splashing out on a new suit for my wedding or should I just hire one?
Hiring a wedding suit
Pros:
- If you're on a tight budget it's a great way to get a smart suit without blowing a lot of cash.
- A number of top-name menswear designers such as Marc Wallace offer a hire option so the days of the cheap and nasty hire suit are long gone.
- If you're getting married abroad and will have no use for a white linen suit when you get home it may be the sensible option.
- If you're wearing morningwear then it really is the sole option as the only time you'll be able to wear your own morning suit again is if you are asked to be a best man or usher in the future, or if you're planning to go to the races at lot!
Cons:
- It might seem a shame to have to return the wedding suit you got married in once the day is over.
- Someone has to be in charge of returning all the suits after the big day.
- If the suit is damaged you will have to pay for it unless you have paid a damage waiver.
Buying a wedding suit
Pros:
- You'll get to own a fab smart suit that you'll get lots of wear out of.
- Having a suit made specially to fit is a total luxury. You'll never own another suit like it.
- A tailored suit can be made to hide any areas you are self-conscious of such as wide shoulders or a large belly and can even make you look taller and slimmer.
Cons:
- It's not a cheap option. A bespoke suit - made for you totally from scratch - can set you back at least £1000. A suit that has been tailored to fit can cost anything from £500 upwards.
- Unless you buy the same suits for your best man and the ushers you may have to put up with not matching.
- If you have a suit made for your wedding you may have to commit to a number of fittings before it is finished.
