The Honeymoon Clinic
Spoilt for choice? Honeymoon doctor James Bell from Turquoise answers your honeymoon dilemmas
Q: I've always dreamt of an over water bungalow for my honeymoon - where would you recommend and what do I need to consider?
A: Originally the first over-water bungalows were in the Hotel Bora Bora on Bora Bora and now everyone's followed suit, there's many more choices of destinations in the South Pacific. More recently, everyone thinks of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. When deciding on your destination you need to be conscious of the time to get the best weather. The South Pacific is best in the British summer months and the Maldives has the best weather in the UK winter months.
The best over water bungalow is always the one at the end of the pontoon as this will have an unobscured view of the horizon. And it will be best for deep water swimming. Also consider the direction your bungalow is facing - do you prefer romantic sunsets or a sunrise?
A great feature of over-water bungalows is Tahiti Television. In other words, glass-top coffee tables/holes in the floor to view the fishes below. You can sometimes buy breadcrumbs to feed them - but remember to close the glass afterwards!
Q: Should I go All Inclusive, Bed & Breakfast, or Room Only?
A: Although All inclusive might seem good value, it's much more fun to be able to choose something exotic such as the lobster dish when you are on your honeymoon. Plus you don't want to have to be rising early every morning to ensure that you don't miss the all-inclusive breakfast! We are real believers in sampling the local produce, so it is much better to go room only on your honeymoon so that you can venture out of the resort to visit the local restaurants and experience the local culture.
If you are on a tighter budget then 1/2 board is a good option as it will help your budget. If you are going to a one stop destination, then all-inclusive is a good option but bear in mind that you will always pay extra for imported spirits rather than the local drinks.
