Island paradise

Private islands are the way to go if you want to lose the crowds. I love One&Only Le Touessrok in Mauritius, which has two private islands. Richard Branson's Necker Island in the Caribbean and Frégate Island Private in the Seychelles are also sublime.

Rolls Royce transfers

You know you're off to a good start together when you're collected from the airport in a gleaming Rolls Royce. Sandy Lane in Barbados and the Burj Al Arab in Dubai provide the service for high rollers like Tiger Woods.

Dream dining

Fabulous dining experiences don't have to mean two Michelin stars and Christofle cutlery à la Alain Ducasse's Spoon des Isle in Mauritius(although this is amazing). Equally as enticing is the gourmet picnic served on a private beach by The Beach House in Barbuda.

Forget stark minimalism, I'm talking full-on luxury complete with giant king-size beds and marble bathrooms. The new Dogaressa suite at the legendary Hotel Cipriani in Venice and the honeymoon suite at Four Seasons George V Paris both hit the spot.

Alfresco bathrooms

There are few things sexier than an outside tub for two. My favourites can be found at Golden Eye in Jamaica, where James Bond creator Ian Fleming used to reside, and Cerf Island Marine Park Resort in the Seychelles.

Sensational spas

No sybarite worth their salt will forgo a spa, even on their honeymoon. The current in-place for pampering princesses is Huvafen Fushi in the Maldives due to its two underwater treatment rooms 10 metres below sea level.

Personal pools

If you're not keen on sharing your plane with other people, chances are you're not going to want to swim with them either. Your only option, therefore, is to check in to the Taj Exotica in Mauritius or Oberoi in Bali where you're guaranteed your own pool.

Double bed flights

An absolute must for all honeymoon couples are Virgin's double beds, now offered in Upper Class on all of its 747s. You'll wake up refreshed and raring to go, even on the other side of the world.
