As our taxi draws up at The Peligoni Club (peligoni.com) on the northern tip of Zakynthos, the pink, beer-fulled school leavers that have given the island a bit of a bad rep in recent years seems a world away (30 minutes away back at the airport at least). Here the vibe is tranquil and calm, and the resort celebrates what Greece does best - sailing, scenery and sunshine.

The Club offers accommodation via a mix of privately-owned villas, from a traditional farmhouse to a luxe modern villa overlooking the sea. Their flagship villa Figari' a short walk from the club, sleeps 16 and can host your wedding (they hold wed-receptions in the club, too) as well as drinks/cocktails/party evenings. If you're feeling a bit too sun-baked from lounging by the pool, they'll even send one of their chef's to your villa to whip up a three-course meal.

If you or your man are feeling energetic, there are heaps of water-based activities, from sailing and skiing to windsurfing and paddleboarding. Or just swim out into the clear blue sea together and gaze at the island of Kefalonia in the distance. Obviously, messing about in the water is not compulsory, so for something a little more relaxed, watch everyone else work up a sweat from the decking, or book a blissful massage in the cuter-than-it-sounds 'goat shed' surrounded by bougainvillea.

After a baking day outdoors, the best time of day has to be sunset with a cold beer, a plate of olives and the one you love. Or let the Peligoni team arrange a sunset monastery walk. They'll drop you off by Land Rover and lead you through olive groves filled with aromatic wild-thyme and along rustic paths until you emerge at an abandoned monastery right by the edge of the cliffs. A fantastic picnic, champagne and the stunning views all put a capital R on the romance.

Peligoni (020 8740 3001) offers a range of accommodation including farmhouses, villas, studios and boutique rooms sleeping 2 –20.  Membership to the club with use of all watersports facilities is available from £130 (£60 without watersports). peligoni.com
