ARE YOU BUYING A FAKE - BY MISTAKE

2nd HAND WARNING

One of the reasons we do not sell 2nd hand dresses on YYW is that we don't have the time or resources to police the site. We do not want to be responsible for fake traders ripping you off. The worst thing dress-wise, for you big day is that you have a box arrive and in it is a dodgy dress that you can’t alter, it won’t fit, it’s dirty and how can you know who really made it?

So I started browsing the web to see what’s out there... And oh no - I shouldn't have gone down that road! I stumbled on to some very special 2nd hand wedding dress sites - and this is where I get serious - I am giving out a warning here. BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL it struck me, and how can I put this... some of these sites are very dubious, not as honest as they should be, and a trifle misleading too.

ARE THEY SECOND HAND - OR RIP-OFFS?

There was one lady selling 2nd hand dresses –never worn- and she had a selection of them, now to me that either makes her a very unlucky serial jilted bride or …a shop, which is it? And if she is a shop why doesn’t she say so? If she isn’t, do you want to be touched by the “curse of the unluckiest bride ever?” No I wouldn’t.

If it’s your wedding dress, why show the designer's catwalk or adverts to illustrate the dress/es you have for sale???? Did it not look good on you? Were you not proud to wear it?

HOMETRADERS – WATCH OUT

I am certainly not sitting here in the heart of London either saying that you should not buy from 2nd hand, my top five shops are Chanel, Next, Armani, the 99p store and Dr. Barnardos.
What I AM saying is that some of these sites do not appear to be genuine, they purport to be a nice bride who doesn’t have enough space to keep her dress, so she reluctantly has to sell it... along with the rest of the stock she has! Is she trading from home?, why not say so…? I know you’re not supposed to run a shop from a sitting room of course, it is much cheaper, no rates, no tax, no VAT, no staff ..but where have these dresses really come from? Do we know?

On one website I noticed a lot of dresses that said Vera Wang and then when you read the text it was actually made by someone else, well why lie? Vera is Vera and if it’s not made by her that’s …let me think a mistake or fraud? You make up your mind.

I think you know my feelings about buying dresses online already! I would never knowingly allow someone to buy or sell anything fake. Did any of you watch Channel 4’s programme on fakes on Monday,? I know a fake dress may not in some people's minds be harmful but, take it a few steps further - fake drugs for breast cancer kill.

As usual I’m not trying to dictate where anyone spends their hard-earned cash, but I think that you should be aware that not everyone is kind and honest, I do look forward to hearing from you honestly!!!!

I agree some people are not being honest. I looked at some dresses on ebay where they obviously were the brides own dress from her big day complete with pics of her in it. Another site though claimed bride had become pregnant and was unable to wear the dress "of her dreams". Under sellers other items were two other similar dresses with same "accidental pregnancy" story! So you do need to be careful

When i was watching on ebay i was amazed at home many people where selling loads of diffrent original dresses it seemed a bit odd to me. I was very lucky buying my dress of ebay i asked for lots more pictures and also a reason as to why dress was never worn. I also asked to be sent reciept and certificate of authticity which i got. I did not have a huge budget however you can get bargins on ebay but investigate fully before buying,

The other side of the coin is why are so ripped off in the UK? A dress from a bridal shop in the UK by a well known designer could cost £1000, but the exact same dress, not a copy, but the genuine thing costs half the price if ordered in a different way.

Personally i would just never buy anything i couldn't try on or see in person.

If budget dictated i would much rather go to a sample sale or Debenhams have a ready to wear collection of bridal dresses.

This weekend is very exciting for us, we all go up to Harrogate to see the new bridal collections.
Thus we get inspiration for our next fashion stories.

While we're there, we go to the Bridal Buyer Awards Dinner (you know, you all help to drive the votes for the following categories - best retailer, best menswear retailer, best British bridal designer, best British retail bridal/grooms website – in fact, without your votes where would the awards be!!!!!!)

So last Saturday I had to go out to find evening wear for the event - bearing in mind in a previous life as a Stylist I dressed loads of celebrities and did really big ad campaigns – no problem dressing total strangers and super models, but me……..I bought two tops to go with a fab skirt that I'd made. I got them from a great shop in Loughton, Essex. According to my youngest, everyone else in there was a WAG and we were the only non WAGS in the building.

Then when I got them home the tops and skirt together looked crap, they all looked great apart but combined - rubbish.
To try to improve the look, I then went and and bought trousers, but trousers at a formal do? It’s all a bit casual isn't it.

So basically I’m great at dressing others and rubbish when it comes to myself....
