Hi Leachick

I got married there last September - Out of this World! I'd been 2 years earlier to my friends wedding and it was so good we decided to marry there ourselves.

You will have a great time.

Hi Leachick

We got married on a beach at the Riu Bachata in Puerto Plata in November last year. Absolutely awesome, best thing I ever did, you will love it.

Hi Karen,

Have a look at the websites for the FCO and the Dominican Embassy:

http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1007029391440

http://www.dominicanembassy.org.uk/Marriage.html

They can give you more accurate timescales, if you do it yourself, than I can.
I can, however, tell you what we did, which you might want to consider.
We used a company called RT Translations (recommended by Thomson who we booked with), and they do an "all-inclusive" service package. We sent them our documents, and they translated and legalised them for us, at both the FCO and the Dominican Embassy. The posted them back special delivery. They do it all the time so they know exactly what the requirements are for marriage in the Dominican Republic. It cost £950, which sounds a lot (and it is a lot!) but when I worked out the cost to get our docs translated and legalised at the FCO and the DR Embassy, and then added to that the travel time/cost to get to London and time off work, it balanced it out. It took a load off my mind, for sure. From posting the docs to them to getting them back again, it took about a month. And it met all the legal requirements when we got to the DR.

Hi Leachick

Stating the obvious but...make sure your passports are in date and that they will still be in date (including however long you need to have left on them by your return date) for when you fly out. Then put them somewhere safe. Somewhere that you will remember....don't do what I do and put them somewhere so safe you don't know where they are!

Do some research into the documentation that you will need translated and legalised. I don't think you can actually have them legalised until 12 weeks before the wedding (check that, but that was the rule when we did it), but at least they will all be prepared and ready to rock so you won't be stressing that you won't get them back in time.

Think about what sort of dress you want, and how you are going to get it to the DR. Most airlines have a wedding dress/attire policy; for example, Thomson allow one extra piece of luggage, to go in the hold, for the wedding dress only. It doesn't cost you any extra for this. Other airlines will have different policies; check with yours.
The dress you have will partly dictate how you get it to the DR. If it's a Huge affair, you might have to put it in the hold. Or ship it over, Fed-Ex or similar. If it's not huge, you can probably take it in your hand luggage. My dress was a 'proper' wedding dress with corset, train, gazillions of layers etc, but the wonderful superwoman at the bridal shop managed to pack it into a normal hand-luggage bag, AND my tiara AND the hoop! If you take yours in your hand luggage, you know it will get there with you, and that's another weight off your mind. Check with the dress shops when you go shopping to see if they can pack a wedding dress into a hand-luggage bag.
My bridesmaids carried their dresses in their hand luggage, and Hubby and his Best Man carried their suits in suit carriers as hand luggage. It's all peace of mind really.
I know that sounds like a long way off yet, but if you decide exactly what you're going to do about it, it's one less thing to stress about nearer the time.

I'm having a blank moment and can't think of anything else useful at the moment, so will come back when I have something to say!

Liz

Hi Leachick,
yes am starting to stress a little - but i guess it wont make things happen any quicker, all because there was a mix up with my H2B divorce paperwork. Word of advice make sure you get all the paperwork you need to get legalised and translated and send off as soon at your wedding date/holiday date is within 12 weeks! The only thing that i have found to expire before this time is the stat declarations that expire after 12 weeks! Just had a quote from the solicitors and they said it should cost about £5 each. Once this is done i will go in person to the foreign and commonwealth office and get it all done in a day - saving a bit of time. For the rest you can pay an extra £10 when you send it to the embassy and they get it donw within a week!

doesn't sound too bad sorting all the documents and things. it's annoying i have to wait another 7 1/2 months until i can get it done though but never mind!
would love to chat to any dom rep brides during the build up x

Hi Karen,

We're getting married there too! Our wedding's next month. We've never been there but from the reviews and brochures it looks great.

Hope your big day goes well - good luck!

We are getting married in the Iberostar Costa Dorada in August.

Iam totally stressing about the documents as the Dominican Embassy are telling me different to what First Choice are. Who do i listen to?? If anyone has been married already and got their documents translated independantly could you give me some advice so i can stop paniking it would be greatly appreciated, i think my work colleagues are going to gagg me if i talk about the documents one more time Confused.

Thanks
