Subject : Child of Our Time

Does anyone else watch this? Ooooh, I love it. Sometimes it makes me think it would almost be worth having kids just to carry out psychological experiments on them.

I was a little disturbed by all the girls wanting to be thin last night though. And even more disturbed by the mother of the little girl who was the only survivor of really premature triplets, who told her that she was living her life for her dead brother and sister as well - isn't that rather a burden to place on an eight-year-old?!

Anyway, any Weird Bride opinions on it?!

I have never heard of the programme before, but I don't watch TV that often...I might now. What channel is it on?

Yes it's a bit too much responsability for a single kid...

I know it's not the same, but I watched however once that programme about Chinese schools and kids, was a bit scary as well how they try to teach kids of 4 or 5 yrs old to be little man or woman and not being allowed to be a happy and irresponsible 5 yrs old.

Ooh I love that programme! It wasn't on here last night - I'v found it's on at different times up in Scotland to England. I'll keep my eyes peeled for it!

That '7 up' '14 up' '21 up' was really good - following the same kids every 7 years

Ooooh Mrs Jam don't you know that that would be a very selfish reason indeed to have children Razz LOL!

I really like that programme too - it's fascinating! Unfortunately I couldn't watch it last night as my husband's band friends were round practising in the living room, but I will watch it on Catch Up TV as soon as I get a chance!

That doesn't sound good about those girls wanting to be thin, and at that age too...? I've noticed it getting worse over the years though - I often listen to schoolgirls' conversations on the bus, and so many of them are obsessed with being thin - it's quite disturbing.

Oooh that's annoying isn't it, Mrs RB?! Sometimes my Mum will tell me about something on TV and it won't be on BBC NI, or it will be on at 3 in the morning or something ludicrous like that! Luckily we just got Virgin TV in and we can get BBC England!

oh I really wanted to watch it last night as I think it had a part on it where the girls were choosing what clothes they'd love to wear -i'm a girlswear designer and I feel terrible sometimes that what I'm designing may be too tarty or grown up but its very hard when the people above me are telling me its what I have to do and when fashion is dictating a certain look! x

Ah, I do more altruistic reasons, Claire: I'd use them as an excuse to buy myself more pets Razz

Celery, it's a programme that looks at children every year (or is it every other year, I can't remember) to see how they're developing and how they're affected by their environments and so on - I suppose it's a kind of "nature vs nurture" experiment. It's really fascinating. It was on BBC1 last night.

The worst bit of the "thin" thing was when they showed all the girls a series of drawings of girls ranging from underweight to overweight, and when asked to point to the one they thought had the least friends, some of them pointed to the fattest one - and one girl even said "I think she might be quite nasty". Now, I get that the media is to blame for promoting the idea that thin is aesthetically desirable, but where would a child get a moralistic idea like that from? I've wanted to be thinner all my life, but I've never had any suspicion that I'd be a nicer person if I was...!

Oh I can hear the outcry in General Chat now!!!

I think it's every year, isn't it...?

That's shocking about the girl saying the fattest girl might be quite nasty! Perhaps at that age they can't quite distinguish between different positive and negative attributes...? The media has drummed into us that it's better to be thin, so a child might associate all positive things, such as being nice, with being thin...? Or am I talking complete nonsense?! Hmmm... probably!!

I love that programme. Was fascinated that (almost) all the boys wanted to be "rich" and all the girls "kind and healthy". Were the girls just trying to give the "right" answer? Cant believe some of them didnt want to be rich/good looking/famous?

Was especailly interested in the fact that the little boy with with lots of girlfriends chose "kind and healthy" ie the "girls" choice - my 2nd boy is a real charmer and always has LOADS of girfriends (hes 4) - I think he would go for kind and healthy (but possibly because he knows its a "good" choice). He's going to go a long way!! I might even ask him later to pick his answers...

I love the program too as my daughter was born in the same year - but I chose to watch the Apprentice instead (silly hard disc drive was too full to record it!) and so missed it. Bahhhh Sad

wow fascinating - just wrote all the words on separate pieces of paper and read them out and asked son #2 to choose what he would like to be when he grew up. Before I could say any more he chose "kind"! Then I went through the other words asking him to reject one at a time. Until we were left with....kind and healthy!! How spooky is that!

I would be prepared to bet son #1 will go with rich (and famous) he wants to be the new David Beckham!!
