‘Keep a hanky or tissue with you with a couple of drops of either ylang ylang or lavender essential oils (or both) on it. Sniff the hanky whenever you need to, for a burst of the calming, sophorific properties these oils provide. Ylang ylang is also though to be an aphrodisiac, so could come in handy later that evening…’

‘For top-of-the-aisle or pre-speech nerves, try taking an L-Theanine supplement about an hour beforehand. This amino acid, found in small amounts in green and black tea, is calming, reduces stress and anxiety, and improves mood. Plus it’s fast-acting and non-drowsy. Studies have shown it gets to work within 30-40 minutes, creating a state of relaxation and mental alertness similar to that achieved through meditation. You can take it only when you need it, or every day if needed.’
Solgar L-Theanine, £25.85 for 60 capsules, from healthfood stores and selected pharmacies. Lis Cashin, life coach
‘As soon as you wake, take a few moments to visualise the day ahead. Close your eyes and use all your senses. See the day flowing easily, watch yourself walking down the aisle (noting how happy you and everybody else looks), at the reception in the afternoon and evening. Notice the smell of the flowers, the sound of people enjoying themselves. Make it as detailed and realistic as possible, and make sure you see everything happening just the way you want it to. If you’re feeling overwhelmed at any point, take yourself off somewhere private, sit quietly for a moment, and return to this visualisation. Then go ahead and enjoy making it happen!’
Georgia Foster, clinical hypnotherapist and self-esteem expert
‘Correct breathing is vital when you want to feel calm and confident and banish anxiety. Whenever you feel a slight twinge of nerves, take a deep breath in, repeating these words silently: “I am calm and I am confident”. This is what’s known as a positive affirmation. Hold that breath for a few seconds then release it, saying the same words again. The deeper and longer the breath, the more your mind and body will relax. Repeat this breathing pattern three times in the morning and before you go to sleep at night and whenever you’re stressing about your wedding day. By the time it gets to the morning of the big day, it’ll work a treat!’

“The best things to eat for breakfast are foods based on complex carbohydrates such as cereal, toast or crumpets, as it may be a while before you eat again,” says Susan Price of the British Dietetics Association. “And make sure you’re hydrated by drinking enough fluids. You don’t want a headache as you walk up the aisle!
