Hair tips for the mother-of-the-bride
  • Hair tips for the mother-of-the-bride

  • As mother of the bride all eyes will be on you, so don’t stop at choosing an outfit, make sure your hair looks perfect too….

When it comes to your daughter or son's wedding, you want to do them proud by looking your best. A classic yet simple style is a must and if you're wearing a hat, avoid complicated or bouffant styles that might get flattened when you remove it later in the day. A good haircut can have the same effect as a mini facelift, as the length and style not only affect the shape of your face, but your overall appearance. Here's how to ensure you have great looking hair for the big day.

Style to suit
Shorter, feathered, layered and bobbed hair always looks stylish and suits most people. Although hair tends to get thinner and drier with age, a good stylist will cut your hair to create extra volume and texture.

Through thick and thin
Maintain volume by using a volumising shampoo and conditioner and eating a balanced diet. Regular scalp massage is a great way of encouraging hair growth.

Visiting rights
In the weeks before the big day visit your hairdresser for advice about updating your style then invest a few extra minutes every day getting your hair into tip-top shape.

Wash right
After washing, comb out tangles starting from the ends and working up to the roots, rather than tugging hair downwards causing snarls and split ends.

On one condition...
Regular conditioning is essential as hair can become brittle.

Colour me bad
Hair will fade with age but don't make the mistake of trying to recreate the colour you had in your teens. Going to extremes isn't flattering. Very dark hair is too harsh against mature skin tones and being ultra blonde results in a washed-out complexion. Opt for warm mid-rich browns or add golden highlights to brighter your hair. Use a colour protective shampoo to prevent colour fading and add extra shine.

Product lowdown
Confused by the variety of hair products on sale and want to know what each can do for you?

  • Mousse - add body but only use a golfball-sized blob otherwise hair can end up looking dull.
  • Gel - apply to the roots and blow-dry for lift. Gel has a firm hold and can sometimes leave hair looking stiff. Best used on short, textured styles.
  • Serum - coats the hair cuticle with silicone adding fabulous shine, although too much can make hair look greasy and flat.
  • Thickening solution - spray-in formula using keratin, the protein found in hair. Bonds to the hair when blow-dried and holds until washed out.
  • Pomades, waxes and styling creams - add texture and sheen, but use sparingly as too much will result in dull or greasy hair.
  • Finishing sprays - once you've got your style the way you want it, finishing sprays will hold the finished look. They can also be effective sprayed onto rollers to help hold a shape or used on the roots before blow-drying.
