Wedding flowers will always make a fabulous visual impact, from elegant bouquets to eye-catching centrepieces. However, wonderful arrangements can also start adding up, so it's good to know how to spend your budget wisely
Getting the best from your florist
- Make sure your florist know exactly what you like and what look you hope to create. Take along photos of arrangements you've seen in magazines, as well as pictures of your venue, dress etc so they have a good starting point.
- Be truthful about your budget. Don't tell the florist you have £2,000 to spend on flowers if you have £1,000. At some point you'll have to cut back your spending power and that can be difficult. Far easier to work with a smaller amount - you can always add to it if you have some budget left over nearer the time.
- Trust their judgement. Your florist knows a lot more about flowers than you, so take their advice. A good florist will take your budget and your ideas and come up with suggestions to suit. Listen to their ideas and allow them to use their creativity. Equally, if they want to change your ideas radically or keep trying to get you to spend more, they're probably not the right florist for you.
Making the most of your budget
- Use seasonal flowers. They are generally less expensive, as they don't have to be imported or grown specially, as well as being better quality.
- Complicated arrangements involving wiring are time consuming and therefore generally more expensive. Consider simple, hand-tied bouquets and uncomplicated arrangements.
- If there's a flower you particularly love but it's also rather expensive, use it sparingly. For example, if lily of the valley is your favourite, consider just having it in your bouquet instead of in all your arrangements.
- Make the most of your flowers. Instead of leaving arrangements at your ceremony venue, see whether they can be transported to your reception. And, have hand-tied bouquets and posies that can be put in to glass vases on the top table.
- Don't dismiss ‘common' flowers. Carnations, for example, can make stunning pomanders or contemporary centrepieces.
- Use fewer flowers. This sounds obvious, but the easiest way to keep your budget down is to have fewer arrangements. Consider having arrangements on every other table, and forget about large pedestals. Instead, concentrate on creating a wonderful fragrance to fill the room.
