The wedding venue...
A traditional Shinto ceremony takes place in a shrine or chapel on a spring or autumn day to signify good fortune.
More than one wedding dress...
A Japanese bride changes three or four times during her wedding. She starts in a white kimono – representing a beginning and an end: the bride ‘dies’ as her father’s daughter and is reborn a member of her husband’s family. Next, she changes into a Western-style wedding dress before putting on a multi-coloured kimono for the reception, then finally a ballgown.
The banquet...
Each dish in the wedding banquet represents a wish – for happiness, prosperity, long life or children. Lobster is served because its colour represents good luck.
The wedding cake...
The couple cut a ‘stunt’ cake made of rubber and iced with
wax. It has a slot for the bride and groom to insert a knife for pictures. Trays of cake are then brought out from the kitchen to serve guests!
