Over-active sebaceous glands cause an oily complexion. This greasy surface layer is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, trapping dirt and impurities in the skin’s pores.

DIY

Prep: It’s tempting to strip away excess oils with harsh astringents, but it’s better to re-balance over time with a mild formula. Olay Clarifying Cleanser (pictured), £4.49, formulated with sage, green tea and aloe vera, cleanses using salicylic and hydroxy acids to stimulate cell renewal, gently exfoliating skin to leave it looking brighter and helping reduce shine.

Prime: Try L’Oréal Pure Zone Deep Control Anti-Imperfection Regulating Moisturiser, £6.49. Absorbed by each pore, this gel delivers active ingredients to help neutralise oil production and tackle bacteria on the spot.

Protect: Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion, £33.40 (0800 591 818). With its featherlight formula, this lotion works all night long, absorbing excess oil as it forms on the skin’s surface, leaving matt skin ready for your morning make-up.

Perfect: Packed with oil-absorbing ingredients and natural astringents, Darphin Mild Aroma Peeling, £25, helps calm and cleanse skin, unclogging blocked pores and helping to slow sebum production. Expect brighter, velvety-smooth skin with just one weekly treatments.
