While some skins are genetically prone to sensitivity, others can develop intolerance and inflammation, often caused by stress, hormones or simply by using the wrong products. The ideal skincare routine desensitises, calms, soothes and, most important of all, strengthens your skin's natural immunity too.

DIY

Prep: Cleanse with Chantecaille Flower Infused Cleansing Milk, £43 (020 7730 1234) which effectively removes dirt and make-up but is gentle enough to purify even broken skin.

Prime: Moisturise with Chantecaille Flower Harmonising Cream, £48. This anti-inflammatory face and eye cream contains natural UVA and UVB protection - excellent for sensitive skin that is usually intolerant of sunscreens.

Protect: In the evening, massage in plenty of Avène Skin Recovery Cream, £11.60 (Boots stores). Specifically designed to reduce skin sensitivity, this is rich in Avène thermal mineral water used for centuries as a natural treatment for eczema and irritation.

Perfect: By using a combination of all the above , this skin type doesn't always need a weekly treat as it benefits from a simple skincare regime. However, for an extra healing boost, try Dr Murad Cellular Replenishing Serum (pictured), £34.50 (0870 443 6031). It has healing and skin-strengthening properties.
