Which engagement ring is right?
Read our essential guide to choosing an engagement diamond
Round
This is the traditional and classic look for engagement rings. Round diamonds come in several varieties, including modern brilliant-cut with 58 facets and Swiss cut with 34 facets.
Princess
The princess-cut diamond is becoming increasingly popular. It is typically square with sharp, uncut corners. The proportions are considered to be better the more square-shaped the stone is. It usually has 76 facets, giving it great brilliance and fire.
Emerald
An emerald-cut diamond is usually rectangular, with flat rectangular facets.
Radiant
The radiant-cut diamond is a cross between princess and emerald, a straight-edged rectangular or square stone with cut corners and 62 to 70 facets. It has a unique sparkle.
Oblong
Most oblong diamonds are step-cut, like a pyramid with its top removed. Long and thin oblongs are known as baguettes.
Oval
The oval cut is a beautiful shape and if well cut can be almost as bright as a round diamond. It usually has 56 facets.
Heart
This is a truly romantic shape. If well cut and proportioned it can have lots of sparkle.
Marquise
The marquise or navette shape is like a long oval that has been stretched out to a point at each end.
Pear
The pear-shaped diamond is a popular cut. If well proportioned it can have good depth and sparkle. It usually has 58 facets.
