Your wedding day is (hopefully!) the day you’ll smile the most – and it’s certainly the day you’ll be most photographed. But if you don’t want to pay for expensive cosmetic dentistry – or the thought of hours in the dentist’s chair brings you out in a cold sweat – there are still things you can do to make your teeth look brighter and whiter. Beauty Editor Sophie Qureshi shows you how.
Be acid-aware
You might not have fizzy drinks or lots of sweets but that doesn’t mean your diet is tooth-friendly. That healthy breakfast with grapefruit, hot water with lemon or a fresh orange juice might be great for your figure and face, but it can do hideous damage to your teeth. Citrus fruits contain high levels of fruit acids which destroy the enamel on your teeth and can leave them dull and discoloured.
But don’t think that brushing your teeth afterwards will solve the problem. ‘When you eat acidic foods, the acid softens your teeth enamel so if you brush straight after, you literally brush it all off!’ says Dr Mervyn Druian from London Cosmetic Dentistry. ‘Instead, make sure you drink a glass of water straight afterwards and then brush your teeth a couple of hours later.’
