After an epic 24-hour journey, we arrive in Christchurch, pick up our snazzy 4x4 hire car and set off north for Kaikoura, the first stop on our 10-night South Island adventure.
We hit the open road and silence descends – these first views of the New Zealand landscape take our breath away. Rolling, verdant hills play host to frolicking lambs, while in the distance, mountains lord it over the landscape. Only a hobbit ambling over one of the hillocks would complete the picture. Two hours later it’s a different story: the sun has set and we’re navigating a perilous coastal road. In the dark. With sheer drops to the crashing surf.
Luckily we spot welcoming lights ahead. It’s Hapuku Lodge, where we’re staying in one of the four new treehouses. Nothing prepares us for how incredible it is – roaring woodburner, spa bath, the biggest bed we’ve ever seen and our very own viewing point.
An hour later we’ve had a three-course meal and we’re in front of a blazing fire, glass of local Pinot Noir in hand, utterly content.
