You can travel the globe, but those in the know reckon you can’t beat the countryside, dramatic coves and cream teas of Devon and Cornwall during British summertime. Home-grown talent such as Hugh Grant and Pierce Brosnan know that Cornwall is the place to be.
Olga Polizzi’s Hotel Tresanton in St Mawes is the best in the county, if not the country, which is why Prince Charles is a regular guest and celebrity chef, Hugh Fern Wittingstall drops in for dinner. Sister hotel, the Endsleigh in Devon has just opened its fairytale doors on a secluded stretch of the Tamar River near Milton Abbott. The Lugger Hotel in Portloe is the perfect honeymoon hideaway housed in former fishermen’s cottages and offers outdoor moonlit massages as part of its Seboni Spa.
There is plenty to see and do in the region. St Ives is a gem of a destination with its pretty beaches, higgledy-piggledy streets, Tate Gallery outpost and Barbara Hepworth Museum. Padstow is another popular choice, with Rick Stein’s wonderful restaurants. Beat the tide and walk to St Michael’s Mount and have a go at surfing in Newquay.
If it’s dramatic wilderness you’re after, head to the expanses of Exmoor, Dartmoor and Bodmin Moors. A great place to rejuvenate is the wonderful Bovey Castle.
