Exotic Morocco in north Africa is blissfully warm all year, but October is a particularly good time to visit with temperatures at a hot 33C and only a slim chance of rain. Marrakesh and the Atlas Mountains in particular have been a magnet for actors, musicians, writers, fashion designers for years. It was in this heady Moroccan city that musician, Alex James of Blur fell for his now wife, Claire. Jimmy Hendrix partied here in the sixties and Yves Saint Laurent made his home here in the seventies.
Today fashionista John Galliano hosts parties in his Marrakesh home and David and Victoria Beckham come to shop of course, most recently looking for furniture for their new Spanish home. Marrakesh is perfect for those who want a short flight, but also want to catch the sun. There is a profusion of stunning bijou riads (a traditional Moroccan house designed around a central courtyard within the old walls of the medina) in which to stay, wonderfully cheap shopping, designer restaurants and a spanking new Pasha nightclub to dance your Moroccan slippers off.
If you're looking for a classic hotel with magnificent gardens, La Mamounia is the place to stay. For a spot of adventure, head into the Atlas Mountains to Richard Branson's beautiful Kasbah Tamadot or head to the seaside at Essouira.
