Confessions of a shape-up-bride

Hear what happened when Emma and Dave said I do in blissed-out Croatia...

You & Your Wedding blogger Emma Deacon ties the knot in Croatia

I am now back from my wedding in Croatia and am a couple of shades browner and a couple of pounds heavier after straying from the My Special K diet during my honeymoon, but I am very happy and had a wonderful time!

Getting married abroad is fantastic; I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a chilled-out, fun day. We had an ultra- relaxing week in the sun before the wedding day, where we got to see all our 53 guests for dinner, drinks or a day of sunbathing on the beach, which made all the difference when it came to coping with pre-wedding nerves.

The night before the wedding I met with all my female guests at a local beach bar. The girls enjoyed meeting one another over cocktails and cuttlefish risotto, while my soon-to-be-other-half Dave and the male guests bonded over pizza and beer in the Old Town. The night was a real ice-breaker and meant that we didn’t have to introduce our family and friends to each other on the big day. I think the boys might have had a few too many beers though as I spotted some of them staggering around the town looking very merry from my taxi on the way home!

On the morning of the wedding I did some yoga and swam in the sea with my friends until it was time to get ready: a lovely way to start the day. I was then whisked off in a vintage car with my very proud father. Dave and I married in the Sponza Palace which is one of the most beautiful buildings in Dubrovnik’s Old Town – it’s usually a popular tourist attraction so the ushers had to politely block the doorway to stop tourists coming in and taking photos. However, one slightly overexcited bystander stood on my veil and pulled it out of my hair just as I was about to walk down the aisle which was quite a drama!

Dave’s mum is a vicar so she led our wedding service which made it even more personal and touching. Before the ceremony I gave fans to all my female guests, which were much appreciated in the 30-degree heat. After the service, we stopped off for ice creams and enjoyed a boat trip around the islands, which made for some fantastic photos, and the cool breeze was much welcomed by all! Kolocep Island, where we had the reception, was stunning and covered in pine and palm trees; it was so quiet and quaint, it felt as though the whole island was just for us. The tables all had sea views and we were able to watch the sun set behind the mountains as we ate – very romantic! We enjoyed a leisurely four-course meal and danced under the stars: the whole experience was like a wonderful dream.

The day after the wedding, we shared a champagne buffet breakfast with our best friends, lapped up pizza and ice cream on the beach with Dave’s family at midday and savoured spaghetti and red wine in the early evening with my family. So yes, the diet totally went out of the window for a few days, but it’s so easy to pick up again now that I’m home. I’m back on the plan in anticipation for friends’ weddings coming up that I need to look my best for!
