1. Love Actually
Ok, so the entire movie is pretty romantic, but we’ve got a soft spot for the whirlwind romance between Jamie (Colin Firth) and Aurelia (Lùcia Moniz). They meet in Jamie’s holiday home in the South of France, where he goes to lick his wounds after catching his girlfriend cheating on home with his brother. She is his new cleaner, and despite not speaking the same language, they fall in love. He returns to London for Christmas, but realises he loves her and goes straight back to propose… in Portuguese!
2. Sex And The City
Who can forget the moment Big (Christ Noth) proposes to Carrie (Sarah-Jessica Parker) AGAIN after ditching her on their wedding day and breaking up. In true Sex And The City style, he proposes with a blue Manolo Blahnik Hangisi shoe. Swoon.
3. A Walk To Remember
Ok if you haven’t seen this movie, we recommend not carrying on reading, as this is a bit of a spoiler… Basically Landon (Shane West) proposes to Jamie (Mandy Moore) so she can cross it off her bucket list before she dies of cancer. It makes the proposal completely bittersweet.
4. The Wedding Singer
What better way to propose than with a song? Robbie (Adam Sandler) serenades Julia (Drew Barrymore) with lyrics he wrote himself, all this while on a plane. Certainly made the journey more interesting.
5. When Harry Met Sally
Who could forget the amazing monologue Harry (Billy Crystal) gives Sally (Meg Ryan) when he realises he just can’t live without her?
6. The Proposal
When Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) proposes to Margaret (Sandra Bullock) - of his own accord this time, he ask “Will you marry me, so I can date you” as she is being deported. Romantic or what?
7. Walk The Line
Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) stops mid-performance to ask June (Reese Witherspoon) if she will marry him. Ok, so he did put her on the spot in front of the audience, but we just love it.
8. Sweet Home Alabama
Sure, the relationship didn’t last, but as far as romantic proposals go, this is pretty dreamy. Andrew (Patrick Dempsey) takes Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) to Tiffany’s after hours so she can pick a ring, any ring. Just like that.
9. Gone With The Wind
Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) has had her fair share of proposals, but none quite so romantic - and a tad forceful - as Rhett’s (Clark Gable). You kind of have to admire the audacity of a man who would propose to a woman in mourning.
10. Four Weddings and a Funeral
Let’s be honest, Hugh Grant totally nails that proposal thing.
11. Pride and Prejudice
Despite his initial misgivings (she’s not of his birth rank) Darcy (Matthew Macfayden) begs Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) to “end his agony” and marry him already, but she turns him down, telling him he’s the last man she’d want to wed. Ouch. Don’t worry, they patch things up in the end.
12. The Runaway Bride
After many, many engagements, but never walking down the aisle, Maggie (Julia Roberts) is finally the one to get down on one knee when she finds the one (Richard Gere). You go Maggie!
13. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
Bridget being Bridget (Renee Zellweger), she messes up her own proposal by turning up soaked to Mark’s (Colin Firth) law offices and basically forcing him to propose. Still very romantic.
14. The Notebook
When Ryan Gosling says, "I want you. I want all of you, forever. You and me, every day." you just don’t say no.
15. Twilight: Eclipse
Edward (Robert Pattinson) tells Bella (Kristen Stewart) of all the ways he would have courted her had they met when he was a human a few centuries ago, he says, “After asking your father's permission, I would've got down on one knee, and I would've presented you with a ring.” Which he does, with his mother’s ring!
