If you're having a winter wedding, you can definitely look to more creative and unusual ideas for entertainment at your wedding reception. The team at Alive Network, the UK's largest online live entertainment agency, has given You & Your Wedding the inside scoop about five of the top wedding entertainment trends for winter weddings in 2014.

Perfect harmony

Greet your guests at your venue or church with warm and welcoming acoustic music, the entertainment equivalent of a big hug and a hot drink! Start the Christmas spirit flowing with traditional Christmas carollers singing your favourite songs and Christmas tunes. Or, choose a close harmony group to create some musical magic before your wedding ceremony starts, and continue the enjoyment by singing as you sign the register.

Laid-back drinks receptions

When it comes to your drinks, create a cosy and relaxed vibe where your guests can greet old friends and make new ones over a glass or two. (Think mulled wine and warming reds rather than cold beers and bubbles!)

If your drinks reception venue is big enough, choose a lounge acoustic band, acoustic duo or trio, or even an acoustic lounge band for uber-cool entertainment on a chilly winter's day!

Let there be light

One of the joys of winter weddings is that dusk comes early, so you can use lighting to tremendous effect as decoration, highlighting venue features or tables with spotlights, accompanied by warm wash lighting in theatre-style colours.

Laser shows can create stunning landscapes of light that can turn any ordinary venue into a high-tech wonderland of ever-changing light.

Many professional DJs create spectacular lighting for your dance floor, as they spin tracks and lasers with split-second timing to create an international club vibe for your wedding party.

For a more primeval feel for later in the night (and preferably outside) fire and glow performers use real fire and sparks to weave hot trails of lights through the night sky. And who can resist the timeless thrill of a firework display, the perfect end to your wonderful winter wedding day.

Three's company, four's a squash…

Does every top wedding party band have to consist of a fab four style lineup of lads? Not anymore! There's a growing trend for three-piece bands that can whip up a perfect party with as much energy and style as their larger rivals. Ideal for smaller venues (and budgets), these bands pack a real punch but take up less room.

Frozen weddings

Join the continuing fashion for ice-cool weddings, to create your own winter wonderland. Blur the lines between decor and entertainment, for a totally immersive wedding experience your guests will remember until spring.

Stilt-walkers and fantasy characters in ice-themed costumes welcome your guests as they arrive, beckoning them through a pine branch and fur coat decorated doorway into your venue, for a Narnia-type entrance.

Keep the entrance way a little dark, lit up by illuminated living tables serving temperature-defying drinks combining hot liquids and dry ice.

Then, lead them into your main space, transformed into any winter scene you wish by clever use of 3D projection. Turn a blank wall into an Alpine landscape, an Arctic scene, a frozen fjord, or an ever-shifting ribbon of Northern lights. Decorate with ice sculptures that glisten and gleam, and later convert into vodka runs, for ice-cold shots when the party heats up.

Entertain guests with classic Christmas tunes from Christmas carollers or chill-out to small format party bands during drinks and your winter-themed meal, combining seasonal produce for the main course and ice-themed dessert designs.

Then, turn up the entertainment temperature with West End singers performing classic musical hits (including, of course, ‘Let It Go’ from “Frozen”), or a Rat Pack singer and band that are just too cool for school. Keep it smooth as silk with a big soul band, or party like it's New Year with a top rock and pop wedding band.

If space (and budget) allows, invite guests to your outside winter playground complete with an artificial skating rink and snowboard simulator ride. Add a chill-out chalet serving hot mulled wine and chairs heaped with cosy blankets and rugs, plus an iPad with stargazing app (it works even when it's cloudy!). If you just don't trust the weather, bring the Alps into your venue with giant Wii games so your guests can ski, sledge, slalom and skate to their heart' s content – and without the bruises!
