Katie's Long-Distance Wedding
Forget Sense and Sensibility, this week it's all about the scents and centrepieces...
Mini plants in pretty pots make cute centrepieces, or even favours!
Katie, 33, is in PR, while her ex-soldier H2B Ultimate Hero (UH), 38, is a close protection bodyguard. She will be sharing her wedding diary with us in the countdown to her big day on April 30, 2011.
Well brides, it dawned on me yesterday that life actually goes on after my wedding. I am fearful I may suffer PWD (post-wedding depression) as everyone jets back home and I am given my life back. It scared me a little, so I stuck to the tasks at hand.
I was struggling to fathom out how my idea for centrepieces was going to work. I wanted a wreath of tropical flowers with enough room to nestle my Yankee candles inside. My poor florist went into meltdown over it, so after having a rethink I decided I wanted a mini tree they are just so gorgeous and some of the artificial ones are so cute (and you can keep them or lend them to a friend for their wedding).
I was over the moon to discover that confetti.co.uk had mini trees that were a quarter of the price of a fresh arrangement, and which I actually decided I preferred. The colour selection is excellent and would suit any style of wedding. I went with the ivory ones, as my chair covers are so bright, and I didnt want to overload my guests with my eccentric tastes. I was even more thrilled to learn that if you buy five the sixth one is free, and at £14.99 I have brought my table centrepiece budget down by 75%!
So the plan is this: Im going to have two smaller Yankee Candles either side, and some funky table confetti littered around the bases. I have already appointed my bridesmaids to the task of ensuring that the confetti is well sprinkled, so they can sneak down in their robes and slippers with their headsets on and radio back to my bridal HQ (ahem, my hotel room) with their findings.
So although it turns out that I am not the organised Superwoman that I masquerade as, I am still as pedantic as ever about the details. I sat down yesterday with a large selection of fragrances, trying to pick the ultimate one to wear on the Big day. Some of you may think this is ridiculous, but as I am so sentimental and still smell Yardley Tweed to remember my grandmother, scent triggers lots of memories for me, so I knew my voyage to becoming Mrs Hero had to accompany an equally important fragrance. I narrowed it down to the three best, and all for very different reasons.
First, Michael Kors signature fragrance: I remember my boss coming back from the New York catwalk shows in 2000 and presenting me with this perfume. I had just spent 18 hours a day RSVP-ing for her for every major show and party, and organising her entire schedule. If youve seen The Devil Wears Prada, that used to be me although my wardrobe was never that good, and I am not blessed with Anne Hathaways doe eyes or willowy figure. This fragrance was unlike anything I had ever smelled before, and made up for the tearful 7am dates with the fax machine when it failed to send. I was convinced at the time that Id be the editor of Marie Claire Australia by the age of 25.
Second, Hypnotic Poison by Christian Dior: ah, my old and trusty friend it often accompanied me out to many events when I was both consciously and subconsciously looking for the UH. I remember wearing it while watching an interview with Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chilli Peppers), in which he proclaimed to the presenter that he was ready to meet his wife and have children. I thought he was talking about me, and I needed to make it my mission to cross his path.
Rouge by Christian Lacroix for Avon: this is truly a special one, and at £20 a bottle also an absolute bargain! I wore this on a train once and a man told me it was the sexiest fragrance he had ever smelled. I knew it had to make the final line-up.
I had to go with Michael Kors in the end, simply because if it wasnt for those years of picking up dry cleaning, being a minion on shoots and writing about fashion and beauty, I never would have fallen in love with the media, come to the UK and ultimately discovered the UH.
I always sort of knew I would have to trek across the globe to find him. Its strange that during the years I spent wondering about the UH, he was busy jumping out of planes, dating women who wore scrunchies and never watching one series of Top Model.
In the weeks before my wedding, things have really become about reflection. The main thing is, I found the best man for me. It took no end of heartbreak to get here, brides, and whether or not my bouquet is perfect or I am thin enough on my wedding day, I know I made the right choice, and I wouldnt swap him for anything in the world. Not even Anthony Kiedis.
Till next week when it starts to get ridiculously close!
Katie xx
