All Hail the New Hen Party

If the thought of a traditional do makes you cringe, fear not. We've got fresh ideas for the ultimate girls' night out - no L plate required

Magazine fashion editor Bonita Turner had three simple rules for her last night out as a single lady: no L-plates, tiaras or strippers. “Maybe if I was 20 it would have been different, but my fiancé and I had been together for 15 years and I’d have felt silly running around in a tutu,” she says. “I wanted something classy and intimate.”

On a Friday night last November, she got her wish when her glam group of fashionista friends (pictured here) filled a private corner of Prohibition-themed basement bar Bourne & Hollingsworth in London’s Fitzrovia. “The blushing bride had always been adamant about not wanting a traditional hen night, so we rebranded it a bachelorette party and turned it into an evening that was cooler, kitscher and more in-step with her personal style,” says organiser and fellow fashion editor Alison Tay.

Like Bonita, chic brides across the UK are embracing unconventional hen-party concepts, defying the old formula of boozeathon + willy paraphernalia = best night ever. “These days, it’s about girls getting together to experience something new or different outside of their daily routines,” says Lola Dali-Kemmery of Bath Spa Media, publisher of the idea-packed Hen Party Handbook. “Alcohol still plays a role, but it’s not just about binge-drinking anymore – it’s way more sophisticated.”

With everything and anything available – from life-drawing sessions with a hot nude model to stag-inspired pursuits like hover-crafting and orbing (see for yourself at orb360.co.uk) – organisers can tailor the festivities to match their bride-to-be’s interests. For Bonita, a Mad Men-obsessed, vintage-loving vamp, the bygone-glamour vibe at Bourne & Hollingsworth was ideal for an evening of conversation and cupcakes washed down with expertly mixed drinks. “It was a little tea party really – with cocktails,” she says. “Alison also secretly arranged Western Union-style telegrams to read out, from my friends in Dubai, New York and LA, my mum and the groom. They brought a tear to my eye!”

To inspire your quest for party perfection, we've rounded our fave new-school ideas: enjoy on their own or as a warm-up to a stylish night out like Bonita’s.

For crafty types…

“Over the past year, more brides have asked for things like fascinator and lingerie making,” says Jennifer Green of GoHen, which organises inventive parties nationwide. “It means you’ve got something tangible to take away – some guests wear the fascinators at the wedding.” Milliner-to-the-stars Katherine Elizabeth (Alexa Chung and Lily Allen are clients) runs Mad Hatter’s Couture hen parties nationwide from £38pp (katherineelizabethhats.com), while The Makery in Bath holds workshops on creating your own lingerie, jewellery, fascinators and bath treats. Or head to London-based party-pants.co.uk for Stitch Before You Hitch knicker-making lessons, expanding to the Midlands, Sheffield and the northwest this year.

For dancing queens...

“Dance classes really boomed in 2010 and are by far the most popular thing we do,” explains Jennifer. “It started with the pole-dancing craze a few years back and has evolved into a huge range of styles, from a Grease theme to a Glee-inspired lesson with songs like Beyoncé’s Single Ladies.” Fancy something a bit steamier? Have the time of your life at a Dirty Dancing workshop where hot West End star Richard Lawrence (he played Johnny Castle in the pulse-racing show) will teach you authentic choreography – plus a few backstage secrets – at London’s INC Space studios (from £39.95pp; dancinghennights.co.uk). After a glass of wine or two, Baby’s trademark lift will be a breeze!

For domestic divas…

Indulgent culinary adventures are also set to be huge this year, with GoHen adding whoopee-pie and chocolate-martini making to their line-up of cookery, cocktail-mixing and wine-tasting courses. For glittery cupcake goodness, we love private lessons with Cookie Girl, where each hen will learn the latest in decadent decorating and take home eight of her own creations (from £45pp, available in London and selected cities or in your home; cookiegirl.co.uk).

For glamour girls…

You can’t go wrong with a day of pure pampering – especially when served with a vintage twist. Idyllic Days has joined forces with the retro-fab Powderpuff Girls for Hepburn Hens packages that feature afternoon tea (with pink champagne) and girly services like hair and make-up styling, massage and manicures (from £90pp; email dolls@thepowderpuffgirls.com to book).

For chic-retreaters…

Got a bit more time to spare? Lola says weekends away are still popular but post credit crunch, hens are keeping it domestic. “London is the major destination, but Edinburgh, Bournemouth, Oxford and Nottingham are also hot spots.” If zenned-out spa time is more your speed, check out a Swan Weekend at Danesfield House in Buckinghamshire, with champagne, treatments and dinner from £199pp, or the Sparty packages at Loch Lomond’s gorgeous Carrick Spa at Cameron House (from £99pp).

Whatever you choose, speak up about what you do and don’t want. “You hear about Bridezillas, but no one ever mentions Maid of Honour meglomaniacs – glory-hunting hen party planners who organise three to five days of exhausting, obligatory, timetabled activities with an optional trip abroad and fancy dress costing considerable time and cash,” says Alison. “My main aim was to avoid turning Bonita’s party into that cliché.” Mission accomplished, we say!
