American Sweet Heart

Romantically kitsch and sugary sweet, this cake of tiny little pink rosebuds and sugar heart motifs couldnt be more appealing and grily. As such, it is perfectly suited to something like a bridal shower party.

My Fair Lady Cake
As the name suggests, the inspiration for this cake comes from the famous Ascot scene designed by Cecil Beaton for the musical My Fair Lady. Black and white is currently much in vogue for urban weddings, so this cake design is proving very popular. From £625, for about 70 portions.

This design is ideal for beginners, as the sides of the cake are completely covered with flowers, so any little cracks in the icing can be perfectly hidden. You do need good piping skills to make the sugar flowers, but you can make them out of flower paste instead, using a simple five-petal flower cutter to achieve a very similar look.

Butterfly Chocolate Cake

This clever and simple design is ideal for a not-so-traditional wedding. Chocolate brown combined with muted pastel colours is a very modish look right now. Some of my favourite pastels to use in this way are dusky pink, sage green or taupe.

Homage to Cath Kidston

I\'m a big fan of Cath Kidstons work and this wedding cake was inspired by some of her fabric and wallpaper designs. The mix of different patterns and cake shapes works particulary well, as I have tied them together by repeating colours and textures on every other tier. I have topped the cake with a crown of large handcrafted roses in luscious red with cerise-pink centres, which you can make well in advance.

We normally think of accessories when it comes to this famous tradition. But why not reflect something borrowed and something blue on the cake by using some old family jewellery and blue satin bows.
