Planning a wedding abroad
While getting married with the sun beating down on your back sounds wonderful, plan ahead to make sure your wedding day is a success
Looking for an overseas venue for your big day? These seven pointers for organising a wedding abroad will help make it a trip of a lifetime for you and your guests.
1. Save the date
Give your guests as much notice of your plans as possible. Send a save the date as soon as you have confirmed the venue so that guests can book flights and accommodation at the best rates.
2. Know your stuff
Provide as much information as possible in advance. Guests might not have visited the country in question and so will need advice on everything from weather conditions to the cost of lunch or a taxi. Nominating one of your bridesmaids or groomsmen as the main contact for everything is always a good idea - but make sure they know in advance what they are letting themselves in for...!
3. Help is at hand
Make sure you arrange for your wedding planner to be on-site throughout the whole wedding - so you can relax and enjoy your special day without worrying about issues that might arise during the course of th event.
4. Local delights
You've chosen somewhere special for your wedding: make sure you take advantage of what's good and abundant locally. In Marrakech we have beautiful Atlas roses and candles are affordable so they make ideal decorations," says Rosena, of Morocco-based wedding planners Boutique Souk. "We recently did a wedding using more than 6,000 Atlas Roses and 2000 candles, which would be very expensive to do in the UK."
5. The dress
When choosing your dress, think about how you can package it for the journey. Will it be possible to take it on as hand luggage if you prefer not to put it in the hold?
6. Lost in translation
When choosing a destination, ensure that you have an English-speaking celebrant that you have built a good relationship with. The person conducting your ceremony is very important.
7. The night before
Try to organise a welcome cocktail or dinner the night before the big day it is a great ice-breaker for guests and also helps you overcome the emotion of seeing everyone before you have to walk up the aisle!
