Have a romantic honeymoon in Belgium

Y&YW's Gemma Whiley takes a trip to the beautiful city of Brussels

Beautiful Brussels

Brussels, best known for the being the capital of the European Union, the home of Tintin and the famous painter Magritte, is not traditionally a romantic hotspot. But if you’re looking for the perfect alternative to tourist-heavy Prague or Copenhagen for a romantic break, short-haul minimoon or pre-wedding getaway with your man, Brussels is actually a city of hidden treasures. Walking through the steep cobbled streets, you stumble on quaint restaurants and traditional pubs, designer shops, galleries, museums and incredible architecture. You can fly from Gatwick in less than an hour with Brussels Airlines at affordable prices or take a relaxed trip on the Eurostar from London’s St Pancras.

Dolce La Hulpe Hotels and Resorts

The resort

We stayed at the newly renovated 4* Dolce La Hulpe Hotels and Resorts set in the Sonian Forest. A staggering £40m has been spent on the resort to create a serene leisure experience. With a focus on light and relaxation throughout, the windows run from floor to ceiling so you can see the beautiful forest from any angle – including your bathroom! The resort is just a 20-minute drive from the city, meaning you can curl up with your man back at the hotel after a busy day exploring the historic city: but with 264 rooms and fab facilities (including an indoor swimming pool, gym, sauna, fantastic Cinq Mondes Spa, hammam, tennis courts, mountain bike hire and walking/cycling woodland trails) why would you ever want to leave?

Magritte Museum

Magritte Museum

There are many museums and fantastic cultural must-sees, but if you’re art lovers a visit to the newly opened Magritte Museum, part of the Royal Museums of Fine Art of Belgium in the city centre is a must. The museum offers an extensive collection of more than 200 works – including drawings, oil paintings sculptures, vintage photographs, painted objects, posters and more. If you’re left wanting to see more, why not round off your tour with a visit to the house where the painter and his wife lived (from 1930 – 1954), a short tram ride away in Brussels?

Brussels’ Grand’ Place

Brussels’ Grand’Place

This magical square is the commercial heart of the city, surrounded by breathtaking buildings and incredible architecture. The magnificent Tower Hall has an elaborate 100m spire crowed with the statue of Archangel Michael – the city’s patron saint. After a devastating fire destroying a third of the city, the square was rebuilt in 1700 where all the buildings now still proudly stand. I recommend sitting outside one of the pubs, traditional cafes or restaurants set around the square and enjoying the view with a locally brewed beer Stella Artois!

Cinq Mondes Spa

Cinq Mondes Spa

Built and opened last year, the Cinq Mondes spa truly is an exquisite part of the resort and is perfect for that post-wedding pampering session. The decoration and calming music throughout create the perfect ambience, even down to the tiny details of fuchsia-pink rose petals sprinkled on every step. Like the rest of the resort, the spa has large open spaces overlooking the beautiful forest, and with a vast range of treatments and wellness packages – from Japanese baths and rituals to facials and massages – it’s perfect for a romantic visit. The therapists will even create treatments for you and your partner to enjoy at the same time, such as a duo ayurvedic massage with hot oils – bliss!

Dining at Dolce La Hulpe

Dining at Dolce

If all that spa bliss has left you peckish, Pascal Marcin (the awarding-winning Chef at Dolce La Hulpe Brussels) welcomes his guests at the a la carte restaurant Argan or Tree O, the luxurious gourmet restaurant. Tree O offers an original concept where any dish is prepared in three ways so all of the flavours can be really appreciated. Luxury Room: the Sequoia Suite

A comfortable stay

For a truly romantic and luxurious break, stay in the exclusive Sequoia Suite with its dining/lounge area and separate bedroom with an enormous king-sized bed. Enjoy a relaxing soak in the tub in the spa-like bathroom suite, overlooking the treetops of the forest from the privacy of your own suite. All other guest rooms are large with modern furnishings, splashes of colour and fabulous views.
