Mini-moon review: L’Albereta, The Italian Lakes

With fabulous food and drink, beautiful accommodation and a must-try spa, this blissful hotel near the shores of Lake Iseo is the perfect setting for a romantic break - and the scenery is pretty spectacular, too

Location

Visitors to the Italian lakes may flock to the more famous Lake Como and Lake Garda, but lesser-known Lake Iseo is the smart choice for mini-mooners. You get all of the beauty but far fewer tourists, so a boat trip here is a serenely romantic experience. Relais & Château hotel L’Albereta is a short drive away from the Lakes, in a picturesque country setting surrounded by vineyards.

The resort

This former 19th-century residence is a charming combination of period features, boho-inflected elegance and natural beauty – a walk around the glorious gardens is a romantic experience, particularly at sunset. In terms of accommodation, each bedroom is individually designed. The most famous is the Cabriolet Suite, which has a roof that rolls back at the touch of a button.

Tuscany, Italy

Our room may have had a motionless roof, but it was still delightful, with a comfortable bed, spacious bathroom and views across the verdant gardens and countryside – if you’re dreaming of a romantic Italian honeymoon, it doesn’t get better than this.

Activities

The Spa Espace Chenot plays a leading role here. In its ultra-modern space it offers treatments and programmes aimed at improving and maintaining wellness. In case you or your partner is a gym addict, there’s a fitness centre, and an indoor pool. On the beauty and wellbeing side, go for a facial for radiant-looking skin, and to feel enlivened, treat yourself to a Chenot Energetic Massage, which definitely lived up to the name. For ultimate relaxation, a Hydro-Aromatherapy session is a must. This is basically a cutting-edge bath with jets that massage you, as you lie back in water infused with essential oils.

Food & drink

This place is pretty much made for foodie couples. Be sure to secure a table on VistaLago Bistrò’s terrace for lunch – we enjoyed incredible pasta and fish dishes with the most stunning views down to Lake Iseo. We also loved the pizzas at La Filiale – there’s nothing like pizza fresh from a wood-fired oven – which has a menu designed by Italian pizza legend Franco Pepe. For fine dining, Restaurant LeoneFelice is an elegant spot for a romantic supper, with mouthwatering Italian delicacies created from local ingredients.
